Toyah, a name derived from the indian word for "Flowing Water" and apparently comes from the many artesian wells nearby. Toyah began as a trading post and gathering spot for the owners and employees of the large ranches that surrounded the site.

In 1881, the railroad arrived to Toyah and things grew quickly as the town was now a named stop on the infamous Overland Stage route. Toyah had four stores, two banks, four churches, and two hotels with a population at 1100 people by the year 1914.

Soon therafter, a competing town named itself Toyahvale and the shipping routes were changed to there instead, thus causing the decline of the original town of Toyah.

Today, Toyah sits empty, a complete shell of a town in all respects. Driving through the streets it feels post-apocalyptic and other than the howls of marauding bands of coyotes, you truly feel alone while standing in the middle of this town in west Texas.

The Chata Ortega's Bar and Grill is now one of Toyah's most famous spots, having Kevin Costner filmed here in the movie Fandango in 1984 put Toyah on the map, so to speak, only having done so over a hundred years later.

Thanks guys! I've wanted to shoot this town for a long time.

I was on my way to White Sands, so I decided this was the chance to do it. I also hit up Barstow, Marfa and a few other spots along the way.

Jeff, I totally would have hit you up, but I wasn't sure where I was going to be or when, since my main target was for White Sands. I went through here early afternoon to scout and then headed to Marfa for some sunset shots and then headed back to Toyah and Barstow at about 2am. Shot until 4am and then headed to White Sands, getting there as the gates opened at 7:30. It was a helluva day/night. ;-)a

Jeff, that will be a nice long drive to Joshua Tree. I haven't been out there in 20 years, but loved it.

Steve, those were all between 1:00 and 3:30 am or there about. ;-)a

I love the Gary stuff you've been posting, that's another spot I want to hit someday soon.

Great stuff Todd and let me know of you ever come up this way. I've shot some in Gary though I wouldn't go there at night.

Ah come on... shooting in bad places at night, is what makes it fun! There's nothing quite like the adrenaline rush you get, having to get your shot, before you get shot. LOL!

Allen, I'd definitely look you up when I get up that way.

Well, if you're traveling I-20, definitely hit up Toyah. Also check out Barstow, Cisco, Pecos. Jeff might be able to point you towards more around midland and odessa. I sort of hauled through there without stopping much.
