When I bought my Retro10 from Henry's I chose between 2 bags. A PS bag, new with tags. And a Black bag, new with tags , covered with salt stains all over one side. It was winter.
Mississauga store. Wonder if it was returned? Used? I didn't buy the black one I wondered if it might be missing inserts, or whatever it was supposed to have.

Was the bag out in the public area or did they bring it out from the back? If it was out in the public area, then somebody might have stashed those things in the bag to steal them, but chickened out.

The SD cards and memory sticks weren't in any packaging, so I don't think they are new. But thats also a possiblity. The bag was on a public access shelf amongst all the other bags they sell - I don't think they carry any behind the counter.

Little disappointed that "new" doesn't necessarily mean "new" in some cases :S Especially that case in the above post about the winter salt stains... I mean, really, if I'm going to be spending $150+ on a bag, I don't want it used. This one looks perfectly fine in every other regard, I havn't noticed any stains or marks or anything of the sort. The inside pockets of the bag were filled with stuffing to keep the bag "full" looking on the shelf...tag and everything... (though the lowepro tag does look a little beat up...) guess it doesn't matter and could still be a bought/used/and returned item.

One possibility (a small one) is that someone who was looking at that black bag put it on the floor while comparing it to others. If it was in the middle of winter then chances are the carpet/flooring of the store had salt on it from people's boots. Depends where you found the stains though.

The salt stains were big enough to cover 1/3 of the back. Discouraging when faced with new bag price....$209 and tx

I'm suffering from buyers remorse right now. If the think tank retro's werent so expensive in canada I would have considered one. I'm also eyeing the Tenba Messenger but I havn't seen much about them in the forums. Does anyone know much about them or if they would reccomend them?

The pro messenger is just a lot bulkier than I imagined with my gear in it (it might look ok on a guy but I'm a fairly petite girl and the bag overwhelms me :p ). I don't know.... torn right now

Surprised the cashiers don't open the compartments to check for items that might be placed there as spiderpig suggested. On the flip side, if they had checked, you might have been arrested for shoplifting.......

Hah, but no not quite like that - I'm basing it off of weight of the bag, not completely how it looks.

Also eyeing the Lowepro Classified 250AW but I'll have to look at it in person to see if its smaller. At least it holds a laptop..

Yeah but I think the security things at the doors would have been able to sense an unpurchased item even within the bag, its not that thick

I have a Tenba Messenger, and use it more as a briefcase. I don't recommend it to others as a camera bag.

Last time I checked, Henry's had discounted the Retro bags...all but the Retro5. The only way I know how to reduce bulk in a bag is to leave the padding out. That's what Domke does. Have you looked at Domke bags? I have 2. My F3X is a delight. My F2 becomes very heavy with my gear. I use a Domke Postal Pad on both bags.

I like my Think Tank Urban Disguise, a UD40. But it wouldn't carry all your gear. I sold my Retro10 because it was too big and bulky, packing light. And I didn't like the raincover. I am the only one here speaking badly about the Retro bag; however, I don't see any alternatives.

Iused to have good luck working with 2 bags. A storage bag. And a shooter's bag to shoot from.

DaveL

I get sore carrying my gear. So I intentionally pack light.
