I have a old 70's photo of the in-laws with family and have been asked to cut out a group
from with the main one and create a new one.
Any hints ,I know that its probably a basic one but one with links would help me out

cheers

I'm not 100% sure what you're asking, but it would also probably be a lot easier if we could see the photo.

The answer to your question depends on you skill level with PP software.

And it depends a whole bunch on the image and the BG to be dealt with.

I would guess there are at least 50 ways to accomplish what you are desiring.

I have CS5 extended and Im more comfortable with LR3 but i use CS5 more and more theses days so a bit more than a beginner.
The photo in question has a group of 20 in it.My wife's family from a 70's wedding. From that photo there is a group of 4 (which includes my wife her sister and twin brothers) of which she has requested that to be the basics of a new separated photo. So is it a case of selection or another. Is there a link to this
Thanks for the info so far

cheers

Depends on what the final product is going to be, you could either extract the group and make a composite with them and another background, or fill in any background that you need to and crop it down to the group. Again though, we'd be able to give much better and specific advice if you could show us the photo.

Not exactly a great original to work with…
If you have access to the original negative, so you could get a good quality scan, it might be worth the effort, but it will take some effort.

Then again: there are parts of the kids cut off or covered up by other peoples limbs/clothing, so those bits will have to be created somehow (clone from somewhere/someone else or 'paint').

Masking should not be all that hard, but finding a matching new background might be…

If this is the only original you've got, it's a fun exercise, but that's about it IMO.
