Hey Guys,

Just wondering. I was digging through the 1DIII thread, but wasnt able to find the RAW/JPEG shots.

I sold my 7D recently and was saving up for a 5D3/1DIV, however Im still possibly leaning to a 1DIII and glass.

I used to shoot with Nikon at 12MP (D700) and never had an issue, but those RAW/JPEGS were oh so clean on the IQ side. My 7D files never really had the "wow" factor when editing, although I did get some great shots. So now I am getting ready to buy (within a week or so) and ready to make up my mind.

My options:

1DIV
5DIII
1DIII + 24L II

Bleh...decisions decisions

5D Mark IV | 7D Mark II | 100-400L II | 24-105L | 50MM f/1.4 | 85MM f/1.8 | Sigma 1.4x TC | 580EX II | 430EX II |

I just upgraded from 7D to 1DMkIII and tested some bird shots at ISO1600, it's cleaner than my 7D ISO800 in similar exposure.
There's some high ISO comparison between 7D and MarkIV in this thread. https://photography-on-the.net …hp?t=1160672&highlight=7D

I own both the 7D and the 1D3. For wildlife (my passion), I reach for the 7D when the light allows me to shoot at ISO 400 or lower; I like the crop factor and the extra resolution. For all other situations, I really prefer the 1D3. There is something special about the files it produces that I can't really explain. It's still a great camera and a real bargain at today's prices.

Please share some of your 7D images that you are not happy, I am about 80-90% confident we could provide some settings and other pointers on how to get more "wow" from your shots. Also, what do you shoot that the 5D2 wouldn't be a consideration?

You'll lose about 1/2 to 3/4 of a stop coming from the D700.

If you need the 24L, then your choice is made. If it's optional and you don't need 10fps or the build, then the 5D3.

The "wow" i mean is when comparing 5D II raw's vs 7D raw's....5DII IQ is substantially better. The issues I have run into is shooting high ISO with the 7D ( like night football games) at 2.8.

Some other notes of the "why" thinking about 1D bodies:

10fps (may increase my keeper rate)
AF System (my hobby is taking pics of racing and sports)
Ergonomics (1D just feels so good in the hand)
High ISO / Low light capabilities.
Increased Dynamic Range

The 7D is a VERY capable camera and I have gotten some fantastic shots with it:

The 5D2 is indeed better than the 7D no doubt, it has a 1 stop ISO advantage in raw, and a little better contrast/DR, and finally the weaker AA filter allows images to be a bit crisper. I never really found that the 7D was lacking during sporting events at high ISOs though, but I am pretty anal about what settings I use when I do those events.
