I am starting a new job next week at a Cameco Mine in Northern Sask, waaaay up in the boonies - obviously I want to take my camera gear with me and shoot as much as I can. I have never been that far north, so the landscape will be interesting, as well as the Northern Lights... but my question is, can I be assured that my camera will be safe when I am away from my room and on site? I will be flying in for 7-10 days at a time - anyone have any insight on this or ever worked at a mine? they have "apartment complexs", housing up too 1000 staff in one rotation. I have no idea if the rooms lock though (they must, right? )

Thanks.

#1. Get your camera geared specially insured. (I'm using USAA insurance.)

#2. You may likely have some footlockers or cabinets that you can lock up inside which are pretty common for that kind of situation. Just bring some pad locks and secure your gear then you need to. In my community living situation my room does lock but others also have the keys to get inside so I keep my gear secured in a cabinet.

All i know about mines is that its very cold and dark and dirty and probably not the best place to dragging an expensive camera in.

no no, different style of mine - potash processing plant, and I am not going underground haha... I am going to be doing Civil Drafting/Surverying up there, so I will be above ground around the mine site - so no issues there.

but good call on the lock. and getting my gear unsured is something I probably should have done already.
Thanks!!

Never been to a site in Canada but have done FIFO (fly in fly out) to mine sites in Australia...

Best bet is to just do a rotation without the camera and see for yourself.

Bring a camera you won't mind losing.

A friend of mine has done consulting work at sites like that, she's never mentioned theft as being a concern. Her work was in Northern Canada.
