Bought a few toy models to shoot, subjects in a long list of stuff to keep me from going insane with boredom. It always amazes me at how much detail they actually cram into toys these days.

Tell me what you think...

Nice. I was working on similar shots recently. What was the black material you used. It's nicer than what I have.

I thought spinning the helicopter blades was a nice touch!

In number three I thought the DOF was a little too shallow. Since you had the doors open to show details, the inside of the doors was a little blurry.

Great shots overall!

Thanks. Number 3 I kinda did that on purpose for some dumb reason. I shot another one where the door was in focus and the rest wasn't. I chalk it up to playing with a lens I bought recently, keep wanting to shoot everything at f/2.8 with the dang thing.

The black cloth is just some kind of felt-type of cloth I got at Hobby Lobby. I'm sure any cloth store will have the same stuff. Be careful if you wash it though, it doesn't take too kindly to being washed with anything else. You'll get all kinds of lint and crud all over it. It's pretty cheap, I think we only paid around 5 or 6 bucks for it.

What type of cloth are you using? If it's fuzzy like felt that's the best thing to use because it sucks up the light, you can make it pitch black while still lighting your subject if you want. Any cloth that has a sheen to it or has a smoother surface the light can bounce off of it a little, and your black will not be true black. You have to watch how fuzzy it is though because you'll find yourself cloning out stray hairs.

The cloth I use is soft/fuzzy.. it's part of a 9x10 backdrop. It's too course for this type of close up photography.

I like #3 of the second set. The angle/perspective works well for me. It's not as common so it stands out nicely!

If you are so inclined there's a little trick I use to tone-down cloth that's too fuzzy: Electric hair trimmers. Take an electric hair trimmer and run it over the cloth with no comb on it, it'll take the fuzz right off and leave you with cloth that's not smooth but not overly fuzzy. As long as you don't put a ton of pressure on it the trimmers will run smooth right over the cloth and take the excess fuzz off.

Of course if it's a big backdrop you'll be there a while, maybe do like a 4-foot-square section on the bottom corner. When you use it as a backdrop for portraits or whatever you won't see the spot you trimmed, so you wouldn't be ruining the cloth for other applications.

I've got a few panes of glass I use from time to time, haven't done it with the models yet because I've been playing around too much with just the cloth. But, now that you said that I think it's time to whip out the glass and mirrors...

Sadly it looks like my glass and mirror are too small, guess I'll be going to get some Plexi in the next few days...
