And the main points translate to any video making:-

Light, stabilisation and using the correct settings make all the difference.

Very cool! I'm a big fan of this Youtube channel now. I've watched several of their programs and after you get past all the goofy stuff they always end up pretty grounded in reality and tell it how it is. "Would I ever replace my 5D2 with a iPhone 4S, GAWD NO!"
I was pretty amazed at the quality. And that small form factor can fit in places that even a DSLR can't fit. So maybe it's viable if you're willing to take a chance or want that look.

The one I watched on their channel about making a cheap jib was also pretty cool and in the end the main guy again says that he wouldn't trust the jib they made with his camera on it for very long.

So I like that they show you stuff justify it and then compare it to reality and high end gear. Good channel!

I shoot video all the time on the 4s - of my kids!

If a client comes to me for video work, or, I'm doing something person with more serious intent, the DSLR route is a no brainer. The iPhone route is possible given the availability of some video aiding accessories, but I think it's a road you'd want to travel if the mobile look was intended to support the story - or, if you're on a really, really......... REALLY tight budget. ;)

They got pretty good results but that holder/stabilizer thing they used was way too bulky and looked terrible in their test footage. Go for the Steadicam Smoothee if you want good iPhone video stabilization.

Absolutely. They didn't trust that to the iPhone.

I dunno, it looked pretty darn good in the final product.

Yes it did, but did you noticed he added a bunch of parts to make it "a better stabilizer"? Those parts and bulkiness woudnt have been needed with the Smoothee and the cost would have probably been less.

Have you used this product? I couldn't help noticing it's not in your gear list.

Never owned one (yet...), but have played with them and do own the Steadicam Merlin. Steadicam is the top of the line company for high end video stabilization rigs, they have many years of experience developing it. The Smoothee performed just like a mini DSLR/Merlin rig. Its pretty cool and IMO looks to be the best option out there if youre serious about getting stabile flying video out of an iPhone or goPro type camera.
