Does Cannon provide a users manual for the SX40? I cant see buying one or even downloading it will over 100 pages... then have to carry a big binder around.. sortta discouraging if one isnt included or have to buy one... After all what prices we pay for a nice compact cannon it should be included..

The PDF document is just over 12Mb - a snap to download. Here (external link).

The problem is not downloading it's reading the manual on something else than a computer screen.

Assuming the OP is not a complete novice, 75 per cent of the camera's operations will be familiar. I print off the esoterica - the rarely used but might want to - on 8x6 light card and ring-bind as a ready reference away from the computer.

Personally I can live with reading the manual on screen, it saves paper, and I won't have something lying around that won't be used more than a couple of times in the first few months of getting the camera.

I put the manual on my iPod touch. I always have that with me, and if I need to reference something obscure, I have it.

Any chance you have a smart phone of some flavor? Install a pdf reader and the manual on your smart phone and instant e-manual...

I printed it out on my printer, cut it down to size, went by Office Max and they bound the pages for $5, I wanted it to read before going to sleep, so I did want paper.
just my 2 cents worth,
Marcus

the manual is overrated, if you need help with photography, buy a photography book such as Bryan Peterson's Understanding Exposure. You will learn much more about how to use your camera with Bryan's book than reading your manual.

Back to the manual, i literally went through the whole manual for my sx230hs in 1 hour. the print is large while the pages are small in the pdf and most of pages are diagrams anyways. so its a quicker read than most would think, plus with a pdf, you get word searches. you can find things quickly. what the manual is good for is the odd times you need it as a reference. Other than that, I find a printed manual as a waste of physical space.
