From the Spring of 2011 in my yard when a male Merlin snatched a Common Redpoll out of the air not 20 feet from where I was standing. It then flew to this branch where it made sure the finch was dead, posed for this shot then flew off. I had seen this same male catch a few others and miss many times in the weeks and days prior. His mate had started it all at the end of March and I presumed he was taking this meal to her on the nest.
