If you just want a quick release, then install a clamp directly to the monopod. What quick release system are you using now?

So I assume you have a Manfrotto monopod as well. It probably has a reversible stud on it. That let's you directly mount just about any clamp to it. If you're happy with RC2 style QR, you can get this (external link) and mount it to the monopod. If you're not heavily invested in RC2, you might want to consider changing to an Arca compatible system while you're at it. Most people eventually change over.

This is the quick release clamp I use:

Of course you will have to switch to Arca-Swiss style plates, but most will agree that they are more secure. Keep in mind if you do switch that not all AS style plates are the exact same size. RRS and Wimberley are larger I believe than Kirk, Markins, etc. If you end up mixing plate and clamp brands it is better to go with a screw-knob type though a few lever release clamps are adjustable for the closed width. I wouldn't use more than one brand of plate though.

Yes as others have said you just mount a quick release clamp of your choosing directly onto the monopod. Many people use monopods this way.

A ball head is nice because then you can switch to the portrait orientation.

You can do that with an L plate and clamp on the monopod too.

I have THIS for sale. This head is actually the 3229 which was replaced by the 234RC. It will accept the RC2 plates you are already using. I rarely (if ever) used the swivel feature. I was more interested in the quick disconnect features. Great monopod head, I have just moved to Acra Swiss clamps.
