This showed up today... thought it was pretty cool.
All part of the CPS Gold program. My only cost to use it for two weeks
is pay the shipping and insurance back.

we got a 400mm 2.8 once... shipping it back was not cheap

whatever it costs to ship it back, it's less than buying or renting would have cost for 2 weeks.

Canon Professional Service members are allowed to try equipment. Don't view it as a rental because they don't guarantee any dates on the trials.

Hey that's a great idea! I think I'll ask Canon UK if I can borrow a 1DX and a 500 f/4.
On second thoughts I don't need to hear any foul language so I'll leave it.

OK I see where Gold members get service loaners I guess if your camera is being services. I still don't see where it says that they will send you gear to try out.

This would be very useful when I'm stateside.

Never mind I found it. "Equipment Evaluation Loan". Can you explain a little more how that works. Do you just say that you want to evaluate a Canon Mark IV and 70-200 f/2.8 and they ship it to you???

What equipment do you get to pick from and whats the limits of that?

That's true. I wonder what insurance on $8k worth of gear is? Also, where does this stuff ship out of? Can I get it from the Canon Service Center in Jamesburg, NJ? That's only ~45 min. drive from me.

Mine ships from Newport News VA. They will not let you stop by and pick it up.
You have to give them two weeks notice and even then it is subject to availability.
Still a very valuable option to me.

I was thinking more in terms of being able to drop it off in person and save the shipping / insurance costs. I wouldn't mind trying a 5DIII and a 70-200 f/2.8 II to see how they stack up against my 7D and 70-200 f/2.8 I.

Back when I collected shotguns, I shipped a few of them off and had them insured for $10k to $12k, depending on the gun. Insurance on these was about $100 and up to $120, the only hassle was I had to show up at UPS with the boxes open, they wanted to check if the packing was good. Don't know if that's a general thing they do or just my local office.

Can't be more than $100-$150 defintely lot cheaper than renting. Here 1dmk4 rents for $450 for a week. 70-200mmf 2.8 IS II is $165 for 2 weeks. So total more than $600.

I rented a 300 f/2.8 IS from CPS last year... Sadly I ended up with a soft version of it, totally underwhelmed... Regardless, they usually make you insure it less then what its worth (their value probably), so I only had to insure the 300mm for like $3200 or something - Still pricey though.

I plan to rent a lens or two from them this year. Not sure which though. :P Great program.
