It will be tough going with the XSi as I believe it tops out at ISO 1600. My best lighted HS gym I'm at ISO 3200, f/2.8 and 1/640. Most are at ISO 4000, and I have two that I have to shoot at ISO 12,000 to get a shutter of 1/640 at f/2.8.

I shoot a 40D and it tops out at 3200 iso. I could not shoot that lens in the gyms I have shot youth basketball in.

One gym I have a hard time with the 85mm f1.8....

I would say you would need at least a f1.8 lens with that camera for most gyms unless you are putting out strobes.

Agree with both replies. All gyms I shoot in I have to use my 85 1.8, and at LEAST 3,200 ISO. For kicks one day last month I tried my 70-200 Mark II where I was using my 85, and it was a no-go. The only lenses I bring on a gym shoot are the 85 and my 50 1.4.

Indoors, out doors etc? I shoot basketball/volleyball and 70-200 is way too long for me. But also I am courtside on the action as well.

Both @17mm on a crop.

I have used both the 70-200mm f2.8 and the 85mm F1.8 for volleyball. I prefer the 70-200 since I move around to get the shots. I do have to bump up the ISO to 6400 but with NR software. Here are a couple of links to my pics. The first link I used my 70-200 and the second one I just shot with the 85:
