Or do I need to look at something else

I am using my 7d at 6400 all the time paired with a 17-55 2.8. Learn to shoot cross court with the 85 1.8 and you will be better off.

The 85 1.8 will work great also. Just depends on where you have access to shoot from. If the gym is well lit, the 70-200 f/2.8 will work at high ISO.
