Hi folks,

I'm trying to find out the best and safest way to use my Raynox DCR-250 with my Canon SX40 HS.

Just bought the lens and i'm finding some people recommending some sort of lens adaptor and others saying just stick it right on the end of the zoom lens on the camera.

Obviously I don't want to damage my new camera in any way but aso I don't want to go spending money on something like a lensmate adaptor if there is no need.

would appreciate your thoughts please folks?

Kind regards

Ian

The camera's not really threaded for filters or lens adapters. It's essentially got several grooves in the end of the plastic barrel, which a metal filter can cut into to hold your close-up lens or a filter, but after you've done that a few times you'll eventually chew up the lens barrel and it won't hold things any more. Get the Lensmate adapter.

Actually it's a bayonet style receiver. The weird part is that I believe if you were to order the Canon mfg'd filter adapter and the Canon mfg'd hood...they are mutually exclusive usage wise.
I just ordered a cheap filter adapter made by Vivitar which then gives you a standard 67mm threaded end and screwed on a standard 67mm threaded deep 3 position rubber hood which in turn has standard 67mm threads so you can use the hood against glass with a flash with no flash back glare and surprise you can then mount standard filters as well.
So for macro I use the Canon 500D CloseUpFilter doublet and zoomed out to 840mm you get forensic type shots of bugs...huge eye patterns+leg hair and fuzz hairs on butterfly bodies at the SD Wild Animal Park.
Plus using the Canon CloseUpFilter...you can use that on any other lens with step up/down rings.

Lotsa stuff, running outta room and a wife...I keep looking at her and wondering???

Yeah, the filter adapters are bayonet mounted to the camera. However trying to mount a filter directly to the lens, as OP was asking about, will bring about the problem I described. The grooves in the front of the lens mount aren't really threads, though people have forced filters onto them, eventually leading to the problem I described.

Hi folks.

I've ordered my Lensmate adaptor.

Can anyone tell me if the Canon lens cap that came with my SX40 will clip onto my adaptor or do I need to buy a different size.

If the latter, which size do I need to buy?

Thanks very much

The lens cap you have is, IIRC, 52 mm. The adapter takes a 58 mm cap; you'll need to eitehr get a new lens cap (which won't fit onto the Raynox close-up lens, I suspect) or just remove the adapter along with the lens when not in use.
