Canon 135L & 70-200 f/4 IS vs 70-200 f/2.8 IS II

I am thinking between these options but can't decide which option will be better? Could someone who had used them give me some suggestions? Thanks.

I have owned them all and currently have two of them.

Based off your lens collection so far, I would go for the 70-200 f/4L IS and 135L.


All amazing lenses, can't go wrong with any of them.

Depends on what you are shooting. The F4L and F2.8L II are both razor sharp and ultra fast AF. However if you need the extra stop of light you are spending over 1k more.

Id go with the F4L+ 135L (which has an advantage over the F2.8L II in light gathering).

I had a 135L and 70-200 2.8 non-IS and I got rid of both of them for 70-200 IS II. 70-200 was useless without IS and 135L was so sharp and awesome... But also useless without IS. So I had no choice but to ditch them both for 70-200 IS II

So IMO, get a 70-200 IS II.

The lens is PERFECT in every way. (yup, perfect. Magic perfect)

Note that the 70-200mm f/2.8 IS II is like a brick and you can probably get both the 70-200mm f/4 IS and the 135mm f/2 for the price of one (not to mention both combined equal the weight of one, haha). At $1800 I couldn't say no though.

I owned the f4 IS a while back. Sold it after 3 months. Reason? f4 is just too slow for my liking.

I sold the 135L three days ago. Excellent lens, but it does frustrate me with no IS and lack of versatility for my current needs.

My 70-200mkII is arriving any minutes now....currently on a FedEx delivery truck

thanks everyone for your input. It is a very tough decision for me to make. I have been flipping between the 2 options for a while.

I had the 70-200 4.0, sold it and purchased the 135L and a 1.4 converter. Occasionally I wish I had a zoom, but the 135L produces great results. Once I started using fast lenses, 4.0 just seemed too slow. I will say the 70-200 4.0 is a nice size and very sharp. Did not have the IS version, so I can't comment on that. I enjoy the 135L so much I bring it out when a different lens might be a better choice.

The 2.8 zoom is a beast of a lens as aegis noted. Obviously I suggest you get the prime and zoom combo.

135L 2.0 + 70-200L f4 IS
