jwnnm, great shots!
If you don't mind sharing, how did you setup and what configurations/best practices to take norther lights?
I do not mind sharing at all. The set up is as follows 60D with the Tokina 11-16 F2.8
I currently have just a cheapo Sunpak 6600PG with the pistolgrip ballhead, which I used here.
I like the more natural Northern light pictures, so usually I shoot at 1600-2500 ISO
and anywhere from 6-13 second exposures.
Here are the settings for the second shot, I tried copying the EXIF info but this work computer is not allowing me to do that.
Manual exposure, 11mm focal length
F2.8
8 second exposure
2500 ISO
Taken: 12 April 2012 @ 0051 hrs
As far as getting set up to shoot, I work up here so unless I am working nights. I get a call in the middle of the night like this nights pictures, from the night shift that they are out and I am out there in less then 5 minutes grabbing my tripod and shooting. Luckily in this second shot, enough snow had melted that allowed me in that area to shoot from. Usually there is too much snow for me to get there on foot.
Gotta get back to work now. Hope that answered your questions.
