Hello POTN:)

I'm thinking of sending my 50mm in for service. I have lots of dust particles inside the glass element. How in the world?????????? It doesn't affect the image as far as I can tell, but I don't like that it has so much dust inside.

So while its under warranty, (if they cover that issue) I want to see if they can do something about it. I returned the first 50 because I noticed dust particles as soon as I took it out the box, now here I go again:confused:

I plan to get the 1.4, but still would like to have this cleaned and maybe sell it.

Anybody ever sent a lens in for dust cleaning, would this even be covered? Or should I just try to live with it?

TIA for you comments.

This will most likely not effect the pics form this lens. IF it is covered, why not.

Hey Dante, I know that it won't affect the image, but I just don't like looking at it, and when I sell it, I want it to be clean. So I'll call when I get home to see if its covered.

I see there is another thread about this lens, so I guess its due to the poor build quality of this particular lens.

Thanks.

Actually, it's not due to "poor build quality." I just had a couple of new L lenses arrive yesterday. If I look into the lens with a flashlight, I can see some dust. No lens is totally sealed. Air can get into the internals, and where air goes, dust goes. It affect image quality, so why worry about it. Even dust on the front element of your lens won't affect image quality unless it's pretty good chunk of mud. Now, on the rear element - that's a different story - so make sure to keep that clean.

several dust specs can't possibly affect image quality at all but a complate layer of fine dust will reduce contrast/incease flare slightly.

Oddly the 50/1.8 does seem to collect more dust than my other lenses, including zooms (!) which is annoying.
Be aware that sending it in for a service will likely cost a large percentage of it's replacement value.

Once you know how it comes apart it's not real hard to do it yourself.
-or you could also sell it as-is on epay. There are lots of buyers that will pay good prices for such lenses.
I'll find a link to a post where i described how to dissasemble this model lens-

I have a couple of dusts in my 50 f1.8 too and they don't show up on any pics.

Both the f1.8 and f1.4 50mm use the same focusing mechanism, the linear extension focusing. You can see the front part of both lenses protrude when you focus. This movement can drive dust into the lens barrel. I have the f1.4 and have the same issue. At first I was not happy and went to the camera shop for changing to another lens. The salesman said that once a lens is moved to focus, it starts sucking in dust, especially this lens is not totally sealed. Dust in lenses is inevitable, no matter how careful you take care of it, unless all lenses are perpetually positively pressured with inert gas. The explanatio makes sense. Dust normally doesn't affect the image quality, unless moulds enter the lenses. Then you lenses may have to take some anti-fungal tablets.:p Lens care is essential, but if dust happens, you can let it be and live with you.
