Is the s100 worth the extra 200 or so dollars? I'm just looking for something easily pocketable and takes better pics than my iPhone 4s.

Depends. Do you just want to pull it out and snap away, or are you going to put the same care (before and after shooting) into the PS photos as you do into your DSLR photos? If you're not planning to do a lot of work to get the photos, the 300 HS will be fine. If you want to do the work, the RAW of the S100 will pay off.

Unfortunately, I don't have the answer, but I do have the exact same question. I would like to learn more and become a better photographer, and many of the photos on the S100 thread are stunning. But if I'm going to use the auto setting, is the DIGIC 5 technology in the S100 going to produce noticibly better photos? Any thoughts would be much appreciated!

IF you plan on doing any editing, learning about F stop, exposures etc the S100 is the way to go as it will do both. You can turn it to "wife" mode (in my case lol) where someone can just point and shoot no worry and it generate fantastic images (better than the HS300). Then turn it into Super mode for shooting in Raw, long exposures and Ap priority mode and all kinds of more advanced stuff to generate stunning almost DSLR like pics.

If you want just a turn on, shoot and get good pics and nothing else, go with the HS300.

I am selling my T1i and all my stuff to get an S100.

I think you'll learn more about photography with a camera that has more manual control

If you want to be creative, the full manual control on the S100 is great,if you want a better camera than your Iphone, the 300 hs is the way to go.I've had both.Gave my Ixus 220 hs to my younger brother as I wanted something with manual control. The ixus/elph is an incredible little performer and in my opinion the best bang for buck camera, whether the S100 price tag is worth over double depends on what you want from your camera.Iq is pretty similar with the S100 slightly better in low light and sharper at the telephoto end and the elph being better in low light focussing and having a better battery life.

Well, I haven't used an iphone camera so honestly I can't say how it would stack up against Canon's best pocketable camera the S100 which would give you more control. It seems you're looking for a simple snap shot camera. The 300 may be all you need

The "eyes" have it, so check out images from each "system"

PS Sometimes these search results on Flickr Hive Mind do not actually return the camera model you enter, so verify what was used for each one you are interested in. I just modified the search so results may be closer to true.

You say you're looking for a camera that is
'easily pocketable and takes better pics than my iPhone 4s' -
that's exactly what the ELPH 300 is. It's a good value camera
with a wide 24mm lens that slips into your pocket.
Of course, the S100 is better, even in full auto mode,
but I believe the ELPH 300 is good enough for your needs.

its hard to know what you mean by better. better for one person might not be for another person. imo, i think the iPhone 4 or newer iPhones are better at scene analysis than what Canon has to offer. hence, some people can take some decent photos compared to a point and shoot. HOWEVER, a Canon point and shoot is better on the technical basis. Bigger sensor, optically superior, and more controls.

For the s100 and 300hs. if youre only going to shoot in auto mode and jpg, I wouldnt say the S100 is a lot better to the 300hs. S100 can produce significantly better photos than the 300hs, but you cannot really access the power of the S100 in auto mode. You need to play with the settings and post processing helps too. If you just want something to keep in your pocket for quick snaps, go for the 300hs. if you want to have a small camera you can control when you have some sort creative moment, get the 100hs.

Sounds like the 300 hs is what I'm looking for. I'll save the manual controls for dslr. This will be for quick snaps. Now to find a good deal!

The best thing about my S100 was that it made me realize how much I liked my 300HS (so I returned the S100).

Funny you say that because after owning an S100 it made me realise how awesome my Ixus 220 really was as well.Gave my Ixus away to my brother who loves it,S100 is definitely the better camera but the elph/ixus is the best value for money p&s. great looking camera, really, really small and fantastic iq for a p&s especially in low light.

I really love the s100....here is a link on some of the comparisons. I think if you want one of the best compact cameras, with tons of control, the s95/s100 is the ticket,
