I'm considering upgrading from my six year old camera (a 30D) to a more modern body (5D Mark III). The 5D Mark III is obviously more expensive, has better specs, etc. But I was wondering what are the major differences I will experience in day to day shooting? I tend to focus on portrait/people/fashion photography.

If the new 5d is even slightly better than my Mark II, you'll have stunning image quality. You'll also have a nifty auto-focus system, live view, HD video, and so many other little tricks and options that you'll have a hard time keeping up with them. On a day-to-day shooting experience, it'll work just like your 30d, only better.

Gear: EOS 5DMKII; EOS 400D (infrared converted); Canon 24-105mm f/4 L; Sigma 17-35mm f/2.8-4 EX; Canon 70-200mm f/4 L; Canon 135mm f/2.0 L; Pentax SMC Takumar 50mm f/1.4 with EOS adaptor, Rokinon 14mm f/2.8; only enough knowledge to be a clear and present danger to society.

22MP vs. 8MP.
61pt pro AF system vs. archaic 9 pt system.
High ISO noise handling probably several stops better.
Micro focus adjustment.
Live View.
Video.
Longer battery life.
Better LCD.

In other words, it'll be a pretty big upgrade.

I went from a 30D to a 5D II just recently. I loved my 30D, but I really like the 5DII. Your not going to regret your move to a 5DIII. Oh yeah...

CONGRATULATIONS!

Wow that's a big jump. Nicksan covered pretty much all the major changes. I would add that it'll probably take some practice adjusting to the 5D's shallower depth of field, but once you get a hang of it it'll be smooth riding from there. Congrats!

Do you have the lenses to pair with the 5D3 though? Depending on your budget and what you already have it may be more beneficial to purchase a 5D2 and good class.

Big upgrade. Much better metering and autofocusing. Not to mention greater resolution. The viewfinder will amaze you. Then there is the video feature if you really need that.

I use a Kodak Brownie
