I'm a beginner as well. I went from 40D -> 7D -> 5D II. I opted 5D II over 7D because I prefer image quality for portraits and landscapes over all the features of the 7D (best for sports and wildlife shooting).
Also, I prefer the easy 9 AF vs confusing 19 AF. :D

Hi bro. Good luck.

Lol, seriously? 7D AF is FAR FAR better than 5DII. and it’s not confusing. haha this is funny... first time I hear someone like 5DII’s AF system better than 7D

2Live4 did not imply the 5DII AF is superior to the 7D, only that he found it better for his use.

^Yes. 7D AF is better, but I don't need 19 focus points. I prefer to use the center focus point and recompose. :)

Completely discard the film suggestion. All it will teach you is patience and how much of a waste of $ it is compared to digital. There is nothing film can teach you that you cant learn from studying, practice and experience.

No it isn't. It is the soundest piece of advice in this whole thread.

It would be the height of arrogance and irresponsibility to show up with a Rebel and a kit lens and try to learn on the job. Nothing wrong with the Rebel mind you..

It is somebody's memories he would be playing with. He goes through a set of snaps, the result is lousy and he goes 'Oh-oh, I better give you your advance back...'...??

What are the newlyweds gonna do? Get married again?

He should train himself as a photographer, he should apprentice as a wedding photographer and when he's good and ready, he can hang his shingle. Otherwise, it borders fraud...

Getting into photography classes is a quick way of getting the basics. You can do it by yourself, but it will take time and inclination (to learn, not to photgraph...).

I like shooting portraits, I like candids, I shoot my wife's group for their pleasure and mine. I would not assume the responsibility to cover a wedding, a graduation or a confirmation. I am a competent amateur, but not a professional. I cannot assume the responsibility of a pro.

man i think he means, when he gets to know more about photography he will shoot weddings and parties. so DEFINITELY you should go with 5dm2. 7d is good for sports photographers coz its much faster :) hope this helps.

There is some good logic to this suggestion. First, early on one generally begins to wish an upgrade. Secondly, the higher-end cameras tend to have longer lifespans and thus hold their value longer.

good Judge Joe...

he knew what it was she was shooting with, and when asked where the I series was, she said 'we must not have had it that day' (or something like that)...

he asked where her 70-200 was. no answer...

he asked what f.stop she used. no idea...

then the accomplice wants to know if the plaintiff is giving to give the money back to her dad, who paid for the pics. WHAT business of that is HERs?

sheeeeeesh. even IM not that arrogant or ignorant...

Are these the only two options? Take a class, or go to work without knowledge? The process of learning with books, hands-on practice, internet, etc., is a great option. It doesn't mean you'll learn everything that you can from another person, but it is a very viable way of learning, across all endeavors, that many people choose, with success.
