I've done a bit of searching and reading in this forum, but cannot seem to find up-to-date information on simple video editing software. I don't expect to do much video work with the 7D, but would definitely like to be able to edit the video stream to cut out sections, blend separate shots into a single video, possibly fade from one "scene" to another, etc.

I don't want to spend a bundle for this either because the better half is already upset at the cost of the new camera . Any recommendations?

I anticipate doing something once in a while that might be made into a YouTube video, but I know absolutely nothing about YouTube and what they require. I'd also like to show the videos on a HD television set as well. Any tips would be welcome.

Thanks in advance.

Skip, depending on your PC specs the below Powerdirector editing program is relatively inexpensive and performs very well. I even have Sony Vegas 11 pro and the Powerdirector 10 app is more user friendly for a beginner and alot faster when rendering and authoring the edited clips. I also have the new Corel video studio x5 ultimate which is nice but does cost a little more. I highly doubt you will be satisfied with the results having to convert your video clips down to mpeg 2 or even mpeg 1 to use some of the free editing software like VirtualDub, etc.

You can find some free video converters and then use Avidemux but again your final results IMO are not too desirable.

Also & again based on your PC specs if your running windows and wanting to view your MOV H.264 vid clips straight out of the camera after d/l them you will need the below codec installed on your PC to obtain smooth playback:

Can you post your computer specs including the ram & video card ?

Regards, Ron ;)

Ron, I have a fairly new computer that I built but I'm still running WinXP. I have a Core i5-2500 (3.3GHz), 4GB RAM, and a GeForce GTX 550 Ti (NVIDIA) video board (900 MHz graphics clock, 1GB GDDR5 Memory). I'm using an NEC PA231W monitor (at 1920 x 1080) with the NEC color calibration system option.

Skip, you can always use Windows Movie Maker and convert to WMV for YouTube. The files are small and decent quality. You can make them 1080P, 720P, or 480

Movie Maker is easy to use and learn and it's free. Just an option. (Not sure if it works with XP however....it would be easy to find out)

All of my videos on YT are made with WMM and Canon Point and shoots, S95, or 7D

Nate, I found that I have Windows Movie Maker (ver. 5.1) on my computer already. It will not recognize the .MOV file type which is the video captured by my 7D. It looks like I need to find a converter that doesn't cost an arm and a leg but will still provide HD results.

I can view the .MOV file on my computer, though, and connecting the computer to our television via an HDMI cable also works.

Thanks.

Ahhh. That's before it recognized MOV. You may be able to update or install a new codec. Otherwise, I will post a program if I find one. All the best.

Also, with those specs....I would seriously consider getting Windows 7 home premium and doing a fresh clean install.

I've used Windows Movie Maker with 7D files no problem, on W7, I'm now using Serif Movie Plus X5 they do a freeby which is an earlier version. http://www.serif.com/free-video-editing-software/ (external link)

Here is one that will work.

http://www.videohelp.com/tools/AviDemux (external link)

Got it from this forum question.
http://forum.videohelp.com …5-Need-free-XP-mov-editor (external link)

I also wanted to clarify....I use Windows Live Movie Maker (not Windows Movie Maker) but either way it won't support MOVs with XP as far as I can tell. There are MANY video editors you can try for free. This one looks like it would be decent.

Mini HiJack here

I'm in the same boat searching for a program to use with my 7D. I thought LR4 would be enough but I want to be able to produce a slideshow that has a mix of still photos, and videos......... and I want to be able to cut out parts in the middle of a clip. LR4 can't do this, and I don't think Moviemaker can either. Suggestions?

Thanks!

Be sure and install the free version of the latest Quicktime app in your pc so any of these more advanced video editing programs will function properly. You dont have to use the crappy QT video player but it needs to be in your computer.

http://www.apple.com/quicktime/ (external link)

Also if you desire to ensure smooth HD video playback direct from your clips in Windows Media Player or the PotPlayer Media Player install the below AVCCore 3.0.1 codec:

*** NOTE: You need to have a quality up to date computer running Windows 7 to enjoy running these apps.

By no means do i have the most powerful PC but the rig i recently built below runs Adobe CS5.5 extended, Sony Vegas Pro, and any of the other more intense apps on the market.

Example:

Case: CM Storm Enforcer Midtower/ USB3.0
CPU : i7-2600K
Mobo: Intel DZ68BC Extreme
Ram : Corsair Vengeance pc1600/ 16gb
Video: EVGA Nvidia GTX 560ti
HDD: SSD 120GB Intel 520 series & 1.5 TB WD Caviar Black
Pwr.Supply: Rosewill Capstone 650watt Gold Rated 80+
CPU Cooler: CM Hyper 212 EVO

Fans: 200mm front intake, 200mm top exhaust, 120mm rear exhaust
NZXT Sentry Mesh 5.25 Bay Fan controller

ASUS DRW-24B1ST 24X DVD Burner

LG WH12LS30K 12X Bluray Burner/Player

AFT USB 3.0 Multi-Card reader 5.25 Bay
