After getting photoshop CS5 and learning a bit more I've been looking back at some of my photos and re processing them.
Here are the old ones I processed with Nik and Aperture.

Here are the new ones, I ran through photoshops lens correction and layer blended 3 different RAW adjusted exposures before using Nik.

The differences are more dramatic in the first then second image, since I also blended white balances in the first images to compensate for the overly blue foreground and overly magenta background.
I was able to bring out better texture in the tropical foliage in the distance in both by layer blending. I also was happy with the ability to correct distortion.
I would say for having gotten an education discount Photoshop was well worth it.
