First, I apologize for asking a question that I am sure has been covered before.

I have a calibrated monitor, just switched to a new computer and installed LR 4 and my Epson Sylus 1400 printer. Prints are not matching monitor. Previously, same printer, same monitor and LR 3 on previous computer, all was fine.

I am sure it is something simple I cant find. First I noticed on the older computer, LR was a choice in custom settings, does not seem to available with new computer and printer properties.

I can not find where to turn off color mangement by the printer and make sure that LR is managing color. Is this what is causing the problem?

Hmm...

First, what OS are you using?

Then, when you say you have a "calibrated monitor", what did you use to calibrate it, and was that on your new system or your old system?

As to Lightroom managing the color, when you install the printer driver, if it is a "real" photo printer it should have installed "profiles" for the printer and specified paper provided by Epson. In the Lightroom Print module toward the bottom of the right-hand side there is the Print Job panel where you pick to print to the printer, and then Profile and then the Color Management Profile selection where you choose your printer/paper profile.

If you do this you have to ensure that the color management is turned off in the Epson driver. I don't have the printer but it should be in a part having to do with color management in the driver.

I am on windows 7, i calibrated the monitor with spyder pro on the new system.

I have looked in the printer properties and do not find the box to turn of color management on the printer. Will keep looking, like I said, it worked find on previous install on windows xp. I can select the paper profile in LR4 print options with no problem. I guess what i am missing is turning off color management on the printer.

Yeah, that can be a show-stopper! But, what happens if in LR you set it for the printer to manage the colors, and just print that way? Or is that the way it was set before?

I don't know if this helps, but here's how it's done on the 1900.

Are prints not matching in color or in tone. LR4 has new tone controls (Brightness and Contrast) in the Print module that I have found very useful. If it's color, are you soft proofing?

Yes..i turned it off as shown in your screen print. Does not seem to help. Closes I get to printing what is on the screen is in lightroom, under profile, my monitor calibration is listed. If i select this rather than the paper profile, it is close.

Is it possible that lr is not picking up the monitor calibration?

If using your monitor profile instead of a printer profile is close, it is pure luck and a major crap shoot.

LR uses whatever monitor profile the OS is using. Presumably the Spyder made its profile the new default and loads it to the video card when the computer boots up. If you have other color managed programs (PS, DPP [properly set up], etc.) how do they compare?

Hmm, I'd guess the likeliest possibility it that your profile is just somehow messed up!

You could try re-calibrating. One other thing you could do just for a quick double-check is to check your system monitor profile to make sure it is picking up the correct one from the calibration. If it is, you could change your system monitor profile to the generic/RGB profile, and restart LR and see if it comes out closer, another indication that your calibration profile is likely messed up.

And, Lightroom 4 has a soft-proofing function that you can check and see if it comes close to the print or not.

Also, if you have the Canon software DPP, it can be set to "read" the calibration profile in the Tools/Preferences Color Management tab. Try that and see if something shows up.

Anyway, sometimes our complex systems do get finnicky:)!

It appears that my monitor profile is the default profile ( I named the calibration by the date). I also tried recalibrating...will play with it some more tomorrow night. Thanks for the comments. Will load dpp and see what happens with that to eliminate the possibility it is LR.

uninstalled SpyderPro 3, reinstalled, updated software, recalibrated...printed from LR4, print much better, although not quite the same as shown on soft proof. Had to adjust brightness in printer module. Thanks for the comments

Well, good!

A lot of calibration software is not very helpful with monitor brightness. Lowering the brightness of a monitor is something I do right out of the box.
