Just got a 5D MKII

Bought on the Beach Camera EBay deal last weekend. Arrived yesterday.

I think it has a better image than my 1D MKIII as I would expect. But other than that, I think I am spoiled by both the build and the configurability of the 1D.

Took minutes to configure. All seems fine, no dead or hot pixels.

But I do have a question or two:

First, the shutter is very loud. Sound like the mirror make a good bit of a "thunk" regardless of shutter speed. Is this normal?

Second: When I cycle through the 9 points of focus, it sometimes skips a point or two seeming to favor the 4 corners. Also normal?

I think what will happen is that this and my 1D will become down payments for a 1D X, but too soon to tell. A few weeks to live with it should help.

And, I am off in an hour for a business trip for 10 days, so replies to your replies will likely happen in the evenings when I have time unlike my normal instant responses

I always thought "thunk" was a charming characteristic of the 5D series. I can't really help with the AF points because I set the multi-controller for direct access. With 9 AF points it is perfect as there are 9 positions (8 ways plus pressing the center)

In any case you should be able to fetch $1800+ for it. I placed mine for that much on craigslist and had people jumping over each other for a chance to buy it because I had warranty and a low usage.

Yes, the shutter is pretty loud comparing to my old 7D. It's normal.

I listened to several YouTubes on the shutter and mine is much thunkier, but I'll trust its not a malfunction.

And I do have the multi-controller set the same. But when I move through the 9 points, it skips some. And not always the same point gets skipped.

And last, I paid 1799 for it, so I don't expect to lose much if at all. I do think I am more of a 1D guy though. So we shall see.

Using the multi controller or the wheel?

Only the wheel will cycle through the points, the joystick just gets tapped in the appropriate direction. It can take a little while to get the feel for the joystick (if it is the same as on my 5Dc) and at first you can sometimes miss the point you are going for and get an adjacent one.

If this issue is happening with the wheel, have you cycled it all the way through all the points and started to go around again? From what I can remember, the 5Dc doesn't go in the order you might expect all the way round. If you are getting back to a point already passed through though, without another point lighting at all, there may be an issue there.

The 5DMKII is a FINE body! And YES I agree the 1D series does spoil you and me BUT the 5DMKII for Nature and Landscapes is an excellant,unbeatable body.
Yeah the shutter is a tad noisy and the AF point selection has been addressed.
Now go out and shoot!!

Mine sounds like two pieces of lead slapping together...so I assume yours is normal

I noticed the shutter too when I first got it. It feels as if it's too heavy and causes shutter lag. When I got my MarkIII, it felt as if it's shutter was very thin making it slap very quick.

In other words, its normal

thanks for that. It is the multi controller (same as I have set on my 1D). I do not have the AF points active on the wheel. Will have to check that setting next week when I am back from this trip.
