I'm wondering what the better option is: add 2x TC to my Sigma 70-200f/2.8 II or buy a Sigma 150-500 f/5.6-6.3 lens. This would be primarily for baseball/softball. $300 for the TC or $1070 for the lens.
I currently use a 1.4x and I (as well as my customers) am happy with the quality of what I'm getting for prints.

Personally, I'd go with the additional lens. I know you state it's a daytime lens, but I've been to some dimly lit games during the "daytime"...the 2.8 would be crucial in these situations. Although, I suppose you could always just remove the TC to get back down to 2.8.

The additional lens is a f/5.6-6.3 No way to make that brighter. A 400 f/2.8 prime is not in my budget.

You'll loose significant AF speed with the 2x. You might not be able to keep up with some of the action. With cameras now-a-days, high ISO is pretty useable and adding the 150-500mm would give a great zoom range that you can use for other things too, like birding if you feel the need.

Although I have never used the 150-500- I'd suggest that the 150-500 would likely be the better choice. It probably would not hurt to try a 2.x TC and see if and how well it works- but I would suspect that the 150-500 would be faster and probably a little higher IQ wise. Everyone that I respect that has suggested anything about TC's- suggests that it's hit or miss as to whether or not a 2x TC will work good with any other particular lens.

I have the Sigma 70-200 OS- which is a bit newer.. On the 7D- it's OK- as long as it is stopped down a bit with the 2x tc. On the 5D3- this combo is a bit better. However, for max reach- I prefer using the heavier 50-500 - it's just better overall. I carry around the 2x TC & 1.4 TC in case I am not packing the 50-500.. Besides, the 50-500 looks more impressive..

Decided to try the 2x TC as I found a used Sigma APO EX DG in EX+ condition for $189. Hopefully it will be here for Thursday's game.
