I probably should've researched this before pulling the trigger but I'm wondering if I bought the wrong CPL. Either that or I just need to learn how to use it better.

I purchased a Hoya PRO1 Digital ML PL-C.

From the little I can find online about this filter it's a Linear filter? One site I found said this can cause strange effects for digital camera. I was definitely getting some odd results and having a hard time using it.

I'm looking for a basic filter for landscape photography. Cut the glare, take off the reflection on water, reduce haze, make the blues in the sky pop as well as other colors. Did I get the wrong filter or should I keep trying to learn how to work with this one?

If I did get the wrong filter, what's a decent affordable CPL that would be good for someone getting started?

If it matters, most of my landscape shots are with a 5d2 and 17-40.

LPLs are preferable in terms of the strength of their polarization — they are more effective than CPLs. However, due to the way they reject waves, they break AF and (in some cases) metering on conventional automatic cameras. What odd behavior were you having?

The images were pretty dark and it wasn't really making the colors pop like I was looking for.

I couldn't find that exact filter name on Hoya's website. But I'm guessing the C in PL-C stands for circular which is what you need with autofocus lenses. Can you show us a problem picture?

That makes sense. Since it is a linear polarizer, it doesn't necessarily play nice with auto-exposure. Can you post a few shots with manual exposure?

Also, what subjects are you shooting? I think the color pop can be more subtle than expected unless shooting under ideal situations. The pop is most noticeable if shooting with large expanses of sunny sky.

I'll post some pics tomorrow. I was shooting in full manual. Using the exposure meter, it would read in the middle and the whole frame would be completely underexposed.

The pics do look better on the computer though, they were looking much darker when reviewing them on the camera.

I was shooting sunset shots. A mostly cloudy ski, some mountains, some snow.
