I have and use Breeze Browser which I really like. It converts raw images, shows nice thumnails, does batch conversion/rename/resize...and heck even builds pretty good websites.

I'm on the yearbook staff here at school and we need something like that to organize our photos.

But we run macs here which I havent used before.

What can we get to organize photos and do things like batch renaming?

(oh and think cheap here...like $50 would be good)

I've been using iPhoto for almost two years now. It's a good organizer and has some convenient tools for simple editing. It won't handle RAW files though.

iView Media Pro would work, but it's going to be more than $50, although it might be worth seeing if it was available with an educational discount.

iPhoto version 5 handles RAW, and does all the basic functions well with an easy learning curve. For more complex stuff, like archiving on multiple devices, indexing & searching, and version control, networks, etc... try cumulus - extremely powerful, straightforward to use. Apple has new software (aperature) that looks fabulous, but I haven't tried it yet.

Have I made a mistake? ....... To file my foto's I use Canon's Imagebrowser on a Mac G5 rather than Mac's iPhoto. Should I use an alternative organiser for 1000's of foto's?

Has anyone used Picasa? If not, what is the advantage of iPhoto over Picasa and other available software?

I don't use any of them at the moment, but have been thinking of trying this out.

picasa is ok, but it's windows only for now... iPhoto's advantages: pretty much free unless you've upgraded to OSX from an older box. and it runs under OSX.

i'm completely in love with aperture, and that's just using it for a day. it's a bit slow importing, but once the files are loaded it's very fast, even on my powerbook.

iPhoto wont batch re-name as far as I know...at least I cant figure it out.

That's the largest show-stopper on the iPhoto...otherwise yes, iPhoto is good.
