Michelle,

I don't normally say this, but your watermark is very distracting in this case. All the interest for me is in the eyes and noses of the horses and that's where the watermark is.

Actually the watermark is only through 1 eye of 1 horse, it is not through any other eyes or even the noses for that matter, and I was hoping that someone can learn to look past the watermark when asking for C&C about the actual photo..the watermark is opaque and it is not extremely bold, I followed suggestions from several other members, the watermark is only there because that photo is posted here on POTN which is not a website that does anything about safeguarding people's photos from being stolen. I am by no means a PRO photographer and have no desire to and I am only a very serious hobbyist however I no longer feel comfortable posting my photos here that I feel are halfway decent without an opaque watermark going through the middle of the photo.

I'm looking for honest C&C about composition, DOF, Sharpness etc and quite honestly the watermark I have does not distract that much from the actual photo itself that a photographer cannot look past, sure maybe the general public and friends on FB would not understand why the watermark is in the middle, but from fellow photographers I expect them to know the reason it is placed there on a site that cannot protect photos from being easily stolen.

So..I'm still hoping that others that can look past the watermark can give me some C&C I am trying to learn and getter better and think this message board is a pretty cool place to get some help. I know better than to keep a watermark on a photo when I am going to sell it so I don't need someone telling me it is distracting. For displaying images on a site like POTN it is supposed to distracting in a way that someone is not going to bother trying to remove it from the photo if they decide to save it to their computer.

I also don't think I have to leave my photo vulnerable to be stolen from this site just to get some decent C&C on a photo. I did put up an un-watermarked photo earlier after your comments but then I decided to remove it.

For me, it is hard to see the photograph and judge it critically with a watermark through the center of it. My 2 cents...

about the watermark you admit that it is distracting, in your words "not that much" but yes it is distracting

I also dont understand the paranioa about people stealing photographs...you admit that you are not a pro.....most pics online are not worth stealing due to the size restriction of the file, you clearly cant reproduce it in a decent print. You also own the photo and can copyright it if the need arises

bottom line if you want critic reposition your watermark if you have to have one......

and not to detract from your talent, but who is going to want to steal it ?

there are 1000000000's of photos of horses online with a quick search, i dont see what the paranoia is all about....

Michelle - I think the horses are a bit under exposed - about half a stop or more.

Composition works OK. DOF and sharpness look OK but at this size it's tough to really tell the finer details.

Overall a decent shot.

I am curious though - what makes you feel uncomfortable about posting to this site?

I like the composition with the diagonal line of horses, but perhaps lighten up the horses' faces a bit, I'd like to see the detail of their eyes.

Edit: Lifting the exposure overall as Dave suggested would likely take care of the faces as well. (without any additional lightening)

Thank you Lyssi and Titus213 for your input..this is the kind of C&C I am looking for..specifically about the shot itself..I can definitely boost up the exposure a bit more on the shot.

Titus213 it's not that I am specifically concernced about this site, although I really don't like the fact that anybody can come to this site and download any photo they want. I don't know enough about computers and software and webpages yet to know if a photo I post here in a larger format can be saved the same size and printed out in the same jpeg quality that I have it saved on my own computer, I am assuming that you can, but my main concern is that in order to get the photo to this website I have to host it on Flickr or some other photosharing site and it is on those other sites that I am now a bit concerned since I see so many posts here about photographers getting their photos stolen and used by someone else. There are some pictures that I do plan on selling and for the ones that I do plan on selling I want them protected the best way they can be if it is going to be a photo that I am going to sell. I guess the more posts i read here on POTN about members getting their photos stolen and all the hassle they go through about trying to remedy that situation I am getting a little paranoid.

Some friendly advice- In the future when you post a photo in the C&C section with the words "I would appreciate any C&C on this photo" then maybe you shouldn't be so touchy about the critique you recieve.

If you wanted only a certain type of critique you should have requested exactly what type you wanted before the fact. The watermark is a valid critique of the photo. To my eyes, it is very distracting of an otherwise great horse photo. Honest criticism is a gift in business, photography or otherwise.

Have A Great Day!
