Monopod usage with battery grip?

Hello all,

I would like to ask if it is a good idea to use a monopod(with ballhead) while the battery grip is attached to the camera?
Will this add extra load(torque) from quick release plate and up which might not be advisable or am I worrying over nothing?

You're worrying over nothing. My 20D's grip has never come off and it's still just fine after being on a tripod and on a monopod many times over the years.

Of course, if you're using a long heavy lens that has a tripod ring on it, the tripod ring is what should be connected to the tripod or monopod.

@SkipD,

Thank you for your answer. I mostly use the 24-105 2.8L and the 17-55 EF-S. I think both should not be a problem then.

Although I saw a handy tip on youtube from a guy that swings the balhead over to 90 degrees and uses the lens ring so the camera and lens are always below the top of the monopod instead on top of it.
Lowering the center of gravity this way supposedly should result in a better balanced combination.
But this would work obviously only with zoomlenses from 200mm and up that have a mounting ring.

If you're using the metal Canon-brand grips, there's no problem. If you use a lens with a tripod ring plate, use that (it's there for a reason).

With smaller walk-around lenses, you shouldn't have a problem.

I used to use my 300 f/4 like this (before I had a tripod mound) and while it didn't seem in danger of breaking, the lens did droop quite a bit. Once I got the tripod mount for it, I now mount it to that.

With the lenses you mentioned OP and as long as you have the Canon brand battery grip I think youd be just fine. However, any lenses heavier and I personally wouldnt chance it. Battery grips were not meant to hold the entire weight of a camera, just give the main control buttons a more convenient location when shooting in portrait orientation while your left hand or tripod mount ring supports the weight of the entire rig from a stronger, more centralized point.

I have been doing it for years without a problem. As has already been said with the lenses you have it should not be a problem and most larger lenses have tripod collars or have the option for one like the 70-200 f4.

No problems with mine. Heavy lenses with their own tripod collars get used instead, otherwise QR on the battery grip.

I'll get in line for that. You will make sure it has USM and IS?
