With screen resolutions (finally!) going up again, it might be, imho ^_^, time, to think about upping the pic size limit from 1000px per size. It seems so...limiting...so...last decade! :)

At work I'm stuck on an awful low rez screen, and anything much over the 1000 limit causes me to have to scroll, and I know others are probably in that same boat, but meh...it's an ancient 17" LCD. I'd gladly put up with a bit of scrolling at work if it meant a better viewing experience elsewhere.

Most extremely low end laptops and screens from the past 5 years and newer are at least 1366 px wide. Most modern desktop LCD screens are 1920x1080 or at least 1600x900 (inexpensive small ones).

Imho, should consider upping the max image rez to 1280 per side, or perhaps 1600 (but 1600 might be annoying for some laptop users). (The reason for 1280 instead of 1366 is to allow for border room in the browser).

Additional food for thought: There are plugins/styles for Chrome and Firefox to allow large images to be auto resized to fit well on pages, as well. :) (Wordpress is notorious for people complaining about large images!)

Anyway, thanks for the consideration, just a thought. =p

Many people are also using smaller devices, like tablets or even their phones to browse and post here, and paying for every MB that they download. Don't forget that the advancing technology goes both ways.

We allow 1024x1024 embedded photos. Attachments have a file size limit, due to storage and bandwidth control.

1. The limits we impose are to protect usability of "the average Joe", and they are also (even more) there for limiting download size of a whole thread page (like 15 *8 photos on every page). You can always link to larger photos.

2. Our upcoming (don't ask when!) forum software will intelligently resize images for the viewport in use.

Oooh this sounds interesting. Any chance they'll look less blurry on the disaster that is the new iPad? ;)

I have only iPad 2 for now. I know fitting the content to iPad screen (by the forum code) "prevents" iPad doing its own scaling or text and images. So it will look good, I'm sure. It does on iPad 2 :)

I wish I still had my lovely iPad 2. The new iPad upscales the web x2 and therefore images are blurry. Text is lovely and crisp but anything that's an image is blurry.

Well, the new software sounds interesting!

I recently found out that Facebook now allows larger images to be posted there, and it enables a "hook" to view an image "Full Screen", and that some (but not all) browsers have "turned on" the feature.

I haven't used Facebook a lot for image hosting, and when I have it's at the "smaller" sizes, the largest ones are ones that I've output at the POTN limit, but recently I've began using the Lightroom Publish function for Facebook and have set it to max at about 1600 pixels wide and a bit over 1000 pixels tall, and it really makes a difference when going to the Full Screen View mode, you betcha!

So if our new software will allow for a bigger image and then resize for that type of full screen view, that would be nifty, it gives more "umph" to photo sharing!

I came over to this part of the forum specifically to see if there was a discussion about the image size. I have seen this feature on other forums which aren't even photography/image related and am a little surprised that it's not on this one. This would definitely be a welcomed advance for POTN. The 1024x1024 limit is 4 years old now I think, so I was thinking it might be time for an upgrade to 1280, but this feature would be even better. Currently I am creating and hosting a separate image file specifically for this forum and nothing else. This feature would make it so much easier and take all the thinking and work out of posting images. I'm not asking when, just voicing approval and desire for this upgrade. Thanks for pursuing it.

Chris can you not change the iPad settings to stop it doing that??

I like the 1024px size. For me it is enough for viewing images, I wouldn't share anything bigger than this either. But, I do like the sound of the new forum software resizing the image depending on your screen size, that's good. :)

Nope, I can't find anything. If I could though, websites would be tiny on its 2,048px screen.

I'm happy with the current size, it saves bandwidth uploading as well as downloading.

I am curious as to what you're seeing...I picked up the new iPad specifically for the screen, and side by side with the iPad 2 here at work, the new one displays images better (although marginally, IMO); not blurry at all. ??

I had both the 2 and the 3 together before I sold the 2. The 3 upsizes webpages x2 to fill the screen, otherwise they'd be tiny as the 3's resolution is so high. Upsizing images x2 makes them blurry, that's just the way it is. It makes for surfing the net on it a pain for me. Yes text is lovely and crisp but you get to an image and blurry.

Huh. The images look significantly better, even if just for not being able to see the pixel boundaries, on the new one, for me. I don't see anything that looks like upscaling; small stuff IS *really* small when I pull up any page.
