I would love some comments and critic on these shots. These were from this Saturday night's Jr. Derby bout. The lighting in this particular venue was just about the worst that I have ever seen. I lit this with 3 speedlites. One in corner 3 at a 45 degree angle. One camera right aimed at me for fill as the skaters passed by, and one on camera set at a 1:3 ratio with the other two-for a little fill.

I can't believe these leagues still exist. I had assumed that inline skates had replaced roller skates, but I guess that's not the case. I used to watch roller derby on TV when I was younger - very cool stuff. It ranked up there with wrestling for excitement.

The expressions on some of the young faces that you captured are as intense as those on professional athletes. Great stuff David!

Nice stuff David, looks like you have the OCF setup for that venue nailed. Was trying to pick a favorite, but it's darn hard when they're all so good. So I pick 2...and 5.....and 6 .

This was my first time there as this was an away bout for us. They made me move the flash from where I normally have it, but it worked out. Thanks again Bill.

Ya I had is set to 1/250th or 1/200th it doesn't really matter since I set my exposure to under expose by 3 stops and let the ETTL lights do there thing. This makes my effective shutter speed the same as my flash duration.

great tip
ok if I got this right
If I set my 40D to 3 stops under the middle at 250
it will be like a sync of like 500?
or did I get that all wrong?

Well your flash duration is much faster than that. But essential you will freeze the action much like have a faster shutter speed.
