Resolution number, yes. Everything else, no. All nikon fans know it and that is why they are always taking jabs at the Canon group. They can't stand their inferiority but to change brands would only affirm and publicize their bad choice in selecting nikon.

^^^ fanboy'ism at it's finest. Nikon is such an obvious bad choice. Not talking particular gear just the brand itself.

As a Canon and Nikon shooter it's clear to me that the D800 pushes the photography envelope in a way that no other Canon does at the moment. Whether you need its capability or not is something you have to decide for yourself, but nobody can deny the fact that Nikon has raised the bar with the D800; It's one hell of a camera. Personally I like Canon for their supertele glass, but sure wish they would start investing in better sensor technology.

I am afraid that Nikon's recently released D800 has any current Canon body beaten, at least for birding photos.

Here's the image that has caused me to question whether I should stick with Canon or not (note that it is a HUGE crop):

Does anyone know if any Canon body is capable of resolving that much fine feather detail when the image is cropped to exactly this extent? If not, then why are any of us still shooting Canons?! Isn't that the type of detail we want every single time we click the shutter?

WOW impressive!

Dont forget that the only thing Nikon; well in fact Sony as they produce sensors for Nikon; has done is to take a 16Mp APS-C sensor and put it on a Full Frame Format.
There is nothing revolutionary bout that!!!

Tomorrow Canon could do exactly the same with the sensor of the 7D and end up with a 40Mp Full Frame sensor.
Photosite size will still be the same (with result in noise. Bigger photosite=more light on each of them=less noise)

Its better to invest in good glass, able to give razor sharp pics with our bodies of today and tomorrow.
We change our bodies much more than lenses.

Canon lenses always have 9 out of the 10 best rated lenses.

As new processors and sensors are developed to handle noise better a 40MP sensor developed in conjunction with a new processor today should produce less noise than a similar setup a few years back.

Yeah I agree.
But new technologies cant change the laws of physics.
It will still be : Bigger photosite means more light, more details, more informations, less noise.

Correct but it can change what the final image looks like after the data is captured.

yup.
my 18mp 60d has less noise and much higher pixel density than the old 350d and other rebels of that time.
technology is great. so is new software.

Meh. Sure, it's impressive. What do you expect for 36mp? Now, the shot I'm posting wasn't perfectly lit, my panning technique leaves much to be desired (I mostly wave my camera around like a crazy person), the shutter speed could have been higher, and I was shooting at ISO 400 (a bit above my camera's ideal), but, for a $500 camera, I'd say it's pretty impressive.
