okay... so i know alot about lenses etc.... but i'm in a confused STATE right now...lol

i need a wife angle lens for sports, but right now i just own Telephoto lenses.

50mm 1.4
135mm 2.0
70-200 2.8 IS II

i need some wide stuff, and my budget is cheap... it's for mountain bike sports and in tight areas....

Would a 17-40mm suffice?

I've heard good things about the 17-40, it might be a good selection as it would be an ultra wide on the 5D and standard lens on the 7D. Both are F4 so that part really wouldn't matter between the too. The only thing would be IS on the 24-105 and the extra MM of the lens.

Thanks, but year i highly doubt i'll use the IS, as i'll be shooting mountain bikes and fast moving objects. i had the 24-70mm and it was stolen along with a bag....:-(

I cannot afford another 24-70mm lens right now though!

I have both the 17-40 and the 24-105. The 17-40 is my go to lens for tight spaces and landscapes, and the 24-105 is my walkabout lens .. streets and people shots. I like them both.

Maybe look into a 24 or 28mm prime? What is the lighting like at these mountain biking events? Lots of trees creating shaded areas? If so, you are probably going to want a fast lens to maintain high sutter speed and/or low ISO

I have had great luck with my 12-24 Sigma. I bought it used for 550 I think....I have heard good thing about the 17-40...now I hope to pick up a ver I of the 16-35 soon!

If you don't like the distorted look of a fisheye then stay away from the 12-24....for me I am ALWAYS in the 12 and hope to get a 8-15 soon!!!
