I just got one of these (external link) for my 7D/100-400 combo paired with this head here (external link)

It isn't very heavy and was rock solid at the LA Zoo yesterday. Its Arca-Swill compatible and locks down tight. My only gripe is that the clamp cannot rotate so if you are going to use your camera with an L Plate (like me) it will not tilt forward and back only side to side (not a problem with lens mounts like on the 100-400)... For the money though I am definitely happy.

I have a Neotec monopod & 234 RC tilt head http://www.manfrotto.com …-monopod-with-safety-lock (external link) which I use with a 7d & 300mm F2.8 IS

Its very fast to extend not requiring any locking, just perfect for bird/wildlife shots allowing you to get that ideal height in a second

It cost just over $200 with the head which I guess is not cheap, but for me its been a great investment, I wouldn't leave home without it

Best place to start is with a budget and any preferences regarding max height, weight, collapsed length and lever locks vs twist locks.

I have a Manfrotto 234RC head on top of a Manfrotto 679 aluminium monopod, which I've had for 10 years. Both are more than capable of supporting a 100-400 and any body you like - I use a 7D, 5D2 and 1D3 with mine. As a three section monopod it is not so short when collapsed but has ample load bearing capability for my needs and with just two lever locks to operate it is quick enough to adjust.

I use a Manfrotto 694 magfiber on which I've mounted an old 486RC2 ballhead. The monopod is very nice, unlike the ballhead which is rubbish, its saving grace is that it cost me nothing!

Short of length and weight, a monopod is essentially a stick. isn't it? ?

My answer for most photography questions: "it depends...'

Monopods start with simple bogen $50 one and it is plenty even for 1 series with a supertele. 679 or 680 series. I use one with 1dmk2 and 500mm f4 and 300mm f2.8 is. 100-400L is much lighter. Now if you want to act cool then there is always CF mopnopods but unlike triopds where I will go Gitzo CF ones, CF monopods don't save any weight over simple metal ones. And metal ones last for ever.

I bought a "Best Buy" RocketFish carbon fiber monopod off eBay for $40.

I did a quick search and found one on eBay for $40 as well...

The Manfrotto 680B should be just fine with that setup. But if you want to step up the the top of the line, a Gitzo GM2541 monopod with a Really Right Stuff MH-01 is IMO the best setup out there unless you need a 5-series Gitzo support for weight.
