So whats the consensus?
Im not uptodate but form the bits and pieces Ive read, D800 pretty much beats the 5D mkiii? Better Dynamic Range and better noise even though it has more pixels? Am I wrong?

if i were to choose between the two i would rather have 5DMK3 than D800 because of the # of Autofocus points but that's just me.

I wish i knew as well. But it seems between people being biased and outright angry over this discussion I dont know what to think.

So far all i can really tell is both are quite good. Video is supposed to be better on the canon, I like the megapixals of the nikon. I assume the autofocus is pretty similiar. Canon wins the fps but I rarely rarely ever use the 6.3 I have with the 50d so nikons 4fps sounds fine to me. Of course nikon has better DR and I personally do think that this would help in every picture you took. As for who has better noise control i thought Canon did but I could be wrong. Or maybe canons jpg does but once you start processing raws...who knows?

I guess it really does come down to what you want in a camera. As for me my upgrade path isnt a camera body but rather camera lenses. Ive been eyeing the 70-200 II for quite a while now.

"Beats it" is a pretty broad term.

The Nikon only beats it with detail between f/4 and f/8. Outside of that range is no difference.

However, the 5D3 beats the D800 in fps, less noise, ability to shoot higher iso, and some would argue better AF system.

Yeah. Maybe "beats" was not a good way of putting it.
For me the specs (unless the differences were huge, which they are not) are second to IQ. IMHO What would put the D800 over the top, would be DR, but maybe the difference is not so huge that other "intangibles" could not upset it.

im a canon user , but why is it , this is just my opinion, when i watched the part 1 and part 2 video nikon have won what i think the important features that i want the 5d mkIII have won...(higher ISO less noise on RAW + sharpness and DR)

for the new AF system its pretty much obvious that canon will up that from the older mkII. As well the higher ISO less noise thing.

From what I've read/watched/seen so far, the D800 has marginally more noise at 100% crop. However, at equivalent sizes, they disappear and are as good as or better than their counterparts, but with much more detail.

As for speed, obviously the 5DIII wins.

What specs have you read? Did you even watch the video?

These two cameras are GREAT cameras. no one should be selling off all their L lenses to jump ship to Nikon nor will any Nikon owners dump their G lenses and jump ship to Canon.

Both have GREAT IQ and noise performance. Yes, you can crop a lot more from the D800, but how many of us actually print billboard size photos or crop 100% out of our photos on a daily basis?
I'd say, for your every day working photographer, the 5D Mark 3 is a great camera. It's versatile, it does what you need it to do and nothing more (ie not having 36MP). If you maybe are more of a studio type photographer and want every single detail in the photo to be in your RAW file but you don't care much for FPS or AF, then the D800 is for you. You really can't pick a winner when both cameras excel in the areas that were targeted for improvement by both companies.

Photography is all about "capturing the moment" right? I'd think that having a higher FPS rate makes capturing that moment a lot easier

I'm happy with my purchase. As a serious hobbyist, the 5D3 is more camera than I'll ever need. I graduated from the 40D (1 year) >> 5D Mark II (3.5 years) >> 5D Mark III. Was going to go for the 1Dx until the 5D3 was announced and it had everything that was important to me at half the price. AF, ISO sensitivity, FPS, chromatic aberration correction, and small body for travel sold it for me.
