Is it possible? Ken Rockwell prefers the 5D3 over the D800?

Are you sure he makes money? I'd have to see his tax returns to verify that.

Given that a he now has a paypal link to a monthly subscription and that most of his web pages have advertisements on them, it's a reasonable inference.

But, who cares? Why would anyone want to drive traffic to his idiotic website anyhow?

Coming from a webmaster engaged to a BH and SEO Marketer - You would be amazed what a well ranking site brings in. The ads alone are decent but he affiliates every product he mentions and gets a commission when someone actually buys through his hyperlinks... Sometimes affiliate links will give affiliates purchase credit past the initial landing page.

In short... yes, I have no doubt he's making a decent living off that one site. The only question is whether it's a 5 figure or 6 figure income...

from what I remember, a six figure income from an information site like ken's is VERY hard to do, and only some of the elite bloggers can do this. Ken is definitely high level.

I love the way the guy goes on about how he has kids to feed and begs for donations and sponsored links etc and then he goes and posts a review of his Porsche!

I hate to say something negative about a guy I don't know, but I just read his Recommended Cameras (external link) article, and...I lack the words...I can't fathom how a guy this clueless about photography is making a living off this website. Here's the paragraph that convinced me that he is woefully ignorant about the topics he claims expertise in:

ISO is a rough measure of low-light sensitivity. It only matters if you shoot in the dark, and then shoot without flash. As soon as your flash pops up, the higher ISOs aren't used anyway. Even if you learn how to use the higher ISO settings (few people do), there isn't much difference between cameras of the same type and era, regardless of cost! All the higher ISO settings do is make the picture look grainier, and the cameras that sport the highest ISO settings look horrible at those settings!

It's easy to rat on Ken for his simplicity. But he has a good point: KISS (keep it simple stupid).

Many of us are experienced. For every 1 of us, there are 9 others who just want to add some technical background to the artistic side of photography. And Ken is actually good at explaining stuff to them.

Some conversations compare corn flakes vs. raisin bran. Others say: it's 7am and I'm hungry -- toast?

I like him (not having met him, but through his commentary/reviews on his site), and his site. I know he's a better photographer than I. (and possibly better than many who call him an idiot, perhaps?)

Do I agree with everything he says? No.
Does that change my opinion? No.
Do I think there is some degree of jealousy expressed in these anti-KR threads? ABSOLUTELY.

Weird, huh?

:)
