The 300mm is hard to beat and it accepts the 1.4TC with decent results.
The 70-300 is versatile, sharp, more expensive and does not work well with a TC ( only the Kenko Pro is compatible, it will not work with a Canon TC)

Canon 50D, Canon 100mm f/2.8 IS L, Canon 20-35mm f/2.8L, Canon 70-300 f/4-5.6 L IS and Kenko 1.4 TC

300 for wildlife. if you go with the zoom you will find yourself at 300 all the time anyway. carry a 70-200 and a 1.4 t/c if you want versatility.

300/4 will be better at 300 even f4 vs f5.6 but theres not a lot in it (external link).

The extra stop of speed is quite useful though either for the shutter speed or the 1.4tc

300/4 is weathersealed too, is the 70-300L?

Don't forget that the 70-300 has 4-stop IS while the 300 only has 2-stop

300L f/4 IS isn't weather-sealed... 70-300L is.

thank you for the replys.
i think i will go for the 70-300, mainly because it has the zoom
all the reviews seem to be devided on which is best so i suppose the only way is to dive in and buy the 70-300
