Hello and thanks in advance.

I've been shopping used but buying nothing waiting for the right deal. Today is a 24-70 2.8 for $900 with a dented filter thread (not quite round).

I did some reading on repair and as the dent is so slight I think it may be a steal. Anyone done something like this before or perhaps used a repair shop for such an instance and could tell me what they charged.

Beings things like this happen from drops or collisions I will be fully going through the lens af functions, make sure there are no weird noises etc. but he states it works perfect and is not shy about meeting me so.... What do you think? I'm trying the get good glass at a good price so I can still shoot for the mkiii, I think this lens with the 70-200 f4is would be pretty sweet.

i think it's priced too high...$900 for a lens that you pretty much know has been dropped from somewhere high enough to damage the lens...when you could pay $1025 for a perfectly working used copy...honestly a damaged lens isn't going to have nearly as many buyers...it would cost probably $200 or more to fix...i wouldn't buy it with the intention of fixing it...it'll end up costing you more than just buying a perfect used copy...

plus i'd think the prices of theses lenses may start to come down when the MK II starts hitting the shelves...

i'd offer him $700...

I'd check it out and try to argue a little lower. My 24-105mm had a small crack/dent in the filter ring. It still threads filters and works perfectly and that's for years after first discovering the dent. If the 24-70mm still works with filters and the rest of it works fine then I'd just ignore the dent completely. It might affect resale value a little but if it's not noticeable without being pointed out then it might not.

Good point on the mark ii. Thanks for the advice, from the Pic he sent me i don't think it dropped from very high but still, it did drop. I was going to fix it myself as I assumed repairs by a pro would not be worth it. I'll still take a look at it and see if he won't come down on the price cause the resale point is also very valid. I don't plan on selling lenses but that's even more reason to spend a little extra and get gear in the same shape as the rest.

I've also been watching the price drop for the 70-200 I mentioned and it is mint condition. Maybe I should offer him 900 since its been on cl for a month, maybe he'll bite.

Thanks again

I would not even touch the 24-70 that's been dropped and bent the filter threads. That means that the lens hood was NOT mounted during the drop (which would have passed the energy to the non-moving shell of the lens) and there could easily be partially broken parts internally. You'd have to get the whole thing totally disassembled, fully inspected, repaired, reassembled, and calibrated to be sure that it's in good condition. That service would run the total price out of a practical range.

I agree, for a hundred more you can get a decent version. 700 would be a good deal. It might be a good lens and all, but 900 is a bit high for something with significant damage.

Definitely not a good deal! Is sounds like he's just looking for a victim to buy his broken lens
