I am looking to purchase this lens; buying brand new from J&R or B&H seem the most expensive options as there seem to be so many on ebay. What is the right price range right now given how the market seems to be saturated with these lens right now?

You can get even a brand new from 5 II/III kit, still under warranty, at substantial discount (don't forget to ask for a copy of the receipt for warranty purposes). Buying this lens new from B&H, J&R, etc.. is just waste of money in my opinion.

don't forget to ask for a copy of the receipt for warranty purposes Canon's warranty does not cover resales, only original purchasers and gift recipients. Check out their web site. Check out my photos at http://dkoretz.smugmug.com

Check out their web site. They do not usually worry about the name, just date. Technically you are correct, but in practice, they will fix it as long as the date is within a year Name is Peter and here is my gear:
