I had a shoot today for which I used an Alien Bee and a 50" softbox. Of course, I sandbagged it too. And I had my camera bag. And there were a lot of hills. I'm pretty sure I lost a few lbs today carrying all that around. Not that I couldn't stand to slim down, but all the same, I'm hurting tonight.

Have any of you devised an all-terrain solution for that? Basically, I'm thinking of modifying a hand truck in some way, but I'm not sure where to start. I don't necessarily want the stand mounted to the hand truck as I don't see adding wheels to an umbrella to be a good idea.

Do they make any kind of heavy duty cart that isn't too bulky for this kind of thing?

Well, here's something that could be modified:

I was actually looking for something that a friend of mine used to build and sell, but it was long ago, so I went to Google Images and looked for "refuse cart"

Yup, and I think B&H stocks a few of them.

In the above examples, the wheelbases are too small and the tires too small and hard to navigate terrain other than smooth concrete or asphalt if you ever encounter it.

I found a cart (baby stroller) like this one (external link) on the curb, waiting for the trashman, and modified it. The wheelbase is large, the tires pneumatic. It travels all types of terrain well, including dirt and on concrete or asphalt or... it slides like an ice cube on ice. Plus, with the tires being pneumatic, shock is lessened on equipment.
