your just the kind of person that always sees the grass as greener on the other side...trust me if you had the nikon that you're dreaming of you'd find a problem with it....

I actually -do- have the Nikon... ;) I just dont have a good body to put it on, its shared with someone else in the household on a D3100...

Also I love my 7D, I love my 100L (Except sometimes i wish it was a stabilized 200mm macro instead of a 100... I find it a bit short sometimes) I love my 70-200 f/4L IS and I love my 15-85... if i was really "Grass is always greener" then i wouldnt have so much affection for about 90% of my system... Honestly the only lens i've had an issue with is getting myself a 50mm equivalent for my 7D....

The D7000 doesnt thrill me(its a good body, but i feel my 7D is superior in every way except at the highest ISOs available, Where the D7000 has a small advantage but nothing worth crying over), the D800 is ok, but I'd rather have a 5D Mark III, Nikon doesnt have an f/4 telezoom, and I feel my 100L and 15-85 are better than the 105VR and the 16-85....

i was about to call BS ... until i scrolled over the image in the first post ...
wow, the bokeh looks like "subject movement" and it does make me dizzy.

with the pictures you are posting, i'm guessing the Zeiss 50 makro f/2 would be your alley IF and only IF you care for manual focusing. (in my hands, it's great for close distance shots, but i can't hit focus for long distance shots even stopped down, to save my life)

Glad im not bloody crazy

Thats an interesting thought, Though i still feel 50 might be too long..hmn..isnt there a 35 f/2.8 Macro come to think of it? That might be worth a look

msowsun wrote in post #14293156 (external link)
KenjiS, are you referring to these weird highlights? Do you have a filter on this lens?

QUOTED IMAGE

Thats part of it, No filter on the lens

Its also that the bokeh goes double visioned-ish sometimes... Hard to describe, wish i had kept an example of that, If the above poster thought THAT looks bad i couldnt even look at some without wanting to vomit because it -disoriented me- to look at it....Theres bad, and then theres physically discomforting bad lol...

Anyways.. Thanks for all the advice... The idea of getting a 5D Classic is certainly something i didnt think of.. are they really THAT cheap these days? Hmn.. wonder if trading my 15-85 for one would be better than trading off the 28 and 35 (As i could use one of them with the 5D for some things...) I wouldnt -trade- my 7D for it outright (The pixel density and resolution are too useful for my other shots) a 5DII.. might be worth a consideration however... but that might entail more than just a small swap or addition to the system...

The only reason i havnt sold the Sigmalux is actually the fact i feel I have a really good copy of it, and i dont want to part with it when i could get a FF body sometime in the future...

I could put one of the better focusing screens (Meant for f/2.8 and faster lenses) in a 5D Classic so i can easily tell whats in and out of focus...

Oh and no i dont work in the food industry, i just go out to eat a lot and i enjoy messing around taking pictures of the food and drinks and stuff ;) Its fun for me, Though i wouldnt mind doing it if asked to by a restaurant (And i am considering making a career of it, or at least making some money from it)

The Canon 35f2 is a great general purpose and low-light people lens. It is not optimized for closeups. It will give you flare shooting into the sun, and close up, you get soft corners unless you stop down quite a bit. Wide open, the backgrounds are better.
I ordered a Tokina 35f2.8 macro lens for close views. It has nice bokeh wide open or at larger apertures. Take a look at the lens samples.
I wanted a "normal" view macro lens and there aren't many options out there. The Tokina is the only one for the Canon mount. The 50 gives you the view of 85mm on a crop, and may be longer than you want.

Stop tearing your hair out - just get the 35 L and be done with it.

Time is money and it seems all of the effort to try every other option (other then the one you know would work and last you a lifetime, except it's $1,500) is costing a lot of time. Sometimes it's just worth it to pony up. Think of the money you will save buy not having to purchase a toupee

The Tokina 35f2.8 is a great lens for macro work of larger stuff. Just got mine.

I would have thought that for serious food photography, you'd use either a T/S lens (90mm on FF), or a 100mm macro.

If you don't need fast focusing the tokina is a wonderful lens that is very reasonably priced... Not as fast as the f1.8 and f2 canon lens but very good wide open

I owned one for awhile and loved the results

Bring someone with you and meet in a Starbucks or McDonalds, etc. If they want to do business they will agree.

If you're on a crop, why not the Sigma 30mm f1.4? It's about 1/3rd the price of the 35 1.4L, and performs beautifully.

I would second the 5D and 50 1.4 (or even 1.8) option. That's too tight on a crop, but just right on a FF, and saves you from having to experiment with Canon's 28, 35, and other more expensive widish primes.

I bought the 35 f2 and I so wanted it to be the lens I wanted it to be. But, mine had one soft comer for some reason, so back it went. I got a refund rather than a replacement because I too was not pleased with the bokeh on the trial shots I took with it. Like you, I'm still looking for my "normal" lens for a crop camera....it has to be out there somewhere!

Just grow a pair and ditch the 7D

5D2 and 50 2.5 macro for lovely, soft bokeh on close-ups.
