I rented the Sigma 8-16mm this past weekend and wanted to share a few samples, since it seems there's not too many out there on here. Anyhow, enjoy.

16mm:

Those look impressive.

One thing I wonder about is how an 8-16mm on a crop body compares to a 12-24mm II on a FF body.

@ Echo - Not sure in the slightest. I use a 40D and 7D so I can't help you compare with a FF. Hopefully someone else will come along and be able to help.

Thank you both, I appreciate the comments greatly. First time using a lens this wide... very interesting :)

It's meant to be exactly equivalent, though it only works for Nikon's size of APS-C (1.5x crop); for Canon it's equivalent to 12.8-25.6mm on FF.

^^That's correct regarding angle of view. Thanks for posting these, as I'm considering one for use with my 60D.

You bet Hugh, glad to help. The lens is very fun to use. You do have to be careful of that bulbous front element though. If you're going to get really close to something, I suggest putting your hand on it and then moving the lens closer and closer to your hand.

Why couldn't it been a constant aperture !!!!!

I'm guessing to keep costs and weight down.

Yes, size and cost are the answers. Also, an ultra-wide angle lens has no need for constant apertures. Lenses like this have enormous depth of field, so it's no big deal having variable aperture. Finally, constant aperture lenses are generally no better optically than variable aperture.

Nice photos. You should put them in the archive so people interested in that lens can find them next week, month, and year.... After this thread is fully buried by time and neglect.

@ arentol - Thank you, I've been looking for that thread. Definitely going to add them to it.
@ mannetti - Yeah I wish! That would have been one hell of a sale!

I've been trying to decide on an ultra wide for the last 18 months and I always end up coming back to the 8-16mm. It looks like such a brilliant lens but I don't think I can look past the lack of filters :(. No CPL use isn't too bad at that focal length but not being able to use ND's seems like too much of a sacrifice.
