I see a lot of you listing the Tamron 17-50 without the VC. Are you guys assuming that it is the VC version, or are you meaning the non-VC version? Would you recommend the VC version for this lens?

Agreed ... the 70-200 f/4 IS has probably been the best bang for the buck for me. But that's not exactly what the OP was asking for, so here goes ...

85 f/1.8 (I paid $300 new for mine about 4 years ago)
24-85 f/3.5-4.5 (not an L but a hidden gem which I got for $100 used)
Tokina 12-24 f/4 (another very capable lens which I got for $300 used)

Canon M6ii (black) • Canon M6ii (silver) • EF-M 22 • EF-M 32 • EF-M 11-22 • EF-M 18-150 • EF 35 f/2IS • EF 40 f/2.8 • EF 85 f/1.8 • EF 100 f/2.8L macro • EF 16-35 f/4L IS • EF 70-200 f/4L IS

Why would you guys say 70-200 F4 over Sigma 70-200mm f2.8? Basically same price but one is a stop faster.

I will say any non L equivalent. Like the 35mm f/2 versus the 35mm f/1.4L, the 50mm f/1.8, etc.

I'm in Canada. Isn't that weird!

Don't know much about the Sigma , but it is considerably more expensive than the 70-200 f4 non IS that made my list .

Depends on your perspective. For decent, inexpensive consumer lenses, I would have a very different list than I would have for best value/return on investment for pro use.

The one that really comes to mind for me is Canon 100mm f2. $350 used and insanely sharp, I can't wait to get another.
