What happened here was this is a lens I bought used in late May, 2011. Three weeks later while on a vacation at the Grand Tetons/Yellowstone the AF died on me. I contacted the seller letting him know. I wasn't blaming him or asking for money back. Just informing. It worked when I picked it up and there was no sign of abuse. Anyway, it wasn't until October that I could afford to get it repaired. There was a miscommunication between myself and the repair guy. I am sure he said the repair would be $200 plus tax and take 10-15 days. That turned into $340 and took over 6 months. Not even a hint of a discount for the incredible delay. Apparently the $200 was "just for the part" which was not clearly stated at the beginning plus $100 an hour labour. My fault for not getting a properly written invoice. The 6 months part came about because his supplier, apparently, could not source the part. I get that can happen and would have no problem with it if the communication wasn't one way. I was the one emailing him every couple of weeks asking for updates. Communication from his end frankly sucked. "It should be on today's Purolator, I'Il let you know later this afternoon." I heard nothing back until I emailed him a couple days later. This happened many times over the 6 months. Many many times. To make matters worse, I had to borrow a friend's Nikon kit for a wedding so I wouldn't have to rent a 24-70.
Someone I know had the same repair done by Canon in Mississauga (Ontario). He sent me a copy of his invoice. The same part, same repair details (calibration, cleaning) and it was $100 cheaper and took something like 10 days (I don't have it in front of me now). After all this I was disappointed to say the least. I was so angry about how this went I was going to shout and make a fuss online about how much this repair guy sucks. In the end I've decided not to mention and just move on. Although not completely my fault I have to shoulder some of the blame for 1 & 2. The lens works well now, what's done is done.
Lessons I learned (that should have already known as they're no-brainers):
1. Get an invoice for repairs to be done.
2. When someone is not communicating properly and taking too long GO GET YOUR STUFF BACK.
3. Just take it/send it to Canon if you don't already know of a reliable repair centre. Yes, I know they may have issues too. Everybody does.
Oh well... at least now it works

OH! Almost forgot. Two weeks after getting the lens back it wouldn't mount on a body. The screw, who knows what it's called, that is part of the locking mechanism when mounting a lens was loose and had started to come out. Sigh.
