I still have my 10D and got a 7D last year. Man, the 7D is loud when the mirror flips up. As a matter of fact, all of the cameras I tried last year (including new and used ranging from the Rebels up to a 5D Mark II) are just plum loud. 10D is whisper quiet compared to the 7D. And, it is not just limited to the Canons. Did I miss something? What gives?

I don't suffer from insanity. I enjoy it!!

Could the mirror just be moving faster? What's the FPS on the 10D?

Hah. We just picked up a D700...much louder than our D3100 / 3000 crop bodies...

but the d700 is older compared to the d3100. so what youre suggesting is the opposite of OP.

Or an old Praktica or Exakta from the fifties. People would run to bomb shelters.

I have kept a 10D and 40D just because they are quiet. These are for use in church dedications (not weddings) on tripods fired remotely.

When asked to shoot a particular dedication I thought I'll just take my Mk2 and on the first frame the priest had to start again as I distracted him. In the quiet of the church it sounded just like somebody had slammed a barn door!

Thankfully the mk4s have a silent mode but it's no good remotely fired as it still sounds loud. Maybe because it's on a tripod and that's not helping the sound deading effect holding it would give?

This is what I had noticed when I got my 5D mkii when I had my 50D (not that I have sold it), I thought "Wow, the shutter is loud" though the 5Dmkii is older than the 50D :/

The 5D has a much bigger mirror than the 50D; that's why it's louder.

My 5Dc (2005 model) is often noticed in the crowd by shutter clank.
My 500D (five years newer) almost never.

The motor drive Nikon F makes quite a clatter, too...

I love the sound of my 1DmII in high speed. Like a sewing machine. Those around me say Wow under their breath, I just know it.
