My 300D is ultra quiet compared to my 20D
I've just dug out my old 35mm EOS 50e and was surprised just how much mirror slap it had

The Canon 5DIII silent continuous and single shot mode is so much quieter than the 7D shutter. This feature alone is very impressive and useful.

Gear list: Canon 5D3, 24-105L, 100L macro, 70-200L 2.8 IS II, 580EXII; Gitzo GT1541T, Gitzo GM3551, Markins Q3T.

There are lots of different sounds involved. There is the mirror, the shutter and the reset of the shutter. So 8 times every second, the mirror has to flip up, the shutter releases, the mirror flips down then the shutter resets. It's mostly just mirror noise. That can make quite a bit of noise. I would think that a mirror moving faster would hit with more force since f=ma. You really can't hear the shutter reset motor. It's all much quieter than the rebels though. I wonder if the 100% viewfinder size has an impact. You can always use silent shooting mode though. That locks the mirror up and you only hear the shutter which is really quiet. The only way to get quieter is an electronic shutter. But then you have other issues that degrade IQ.

The motor drive Nikon F makes quite a clatter, too...

Same with the Canon F1.....more than one person asked if were a machine gun.

Funny you should mention that. I JUST upgraded from a 40D to a 5dii. I actually had to google to make sure there wasn't anything wrong with the 5d because the mirror was so loud. It was a really noticeable difference in noise (but the picture quality is far superior so I'm sure I'll get over it!) :)

I've had that 7D scare away more than a few birds too.

Do the silent modes / mirror lock up actually work? I've had a play with mine but it doesn't seem to make any difference

You have to be in live view for it to work. With the mirror up you can't see through the viewfinder.

The silent mode on the 5D3 really does work. You have to put up with a somewhat longer viewfinder blackout since the mirror actuation is much slower.

Its not silent, but its quieter than my 5Dc and 300D. I haven't compared it to my old film EOS since I can't be bothered to buy more lithium cells for it.

That is pretty loud indeed.

The thing is, all the "old" cameras were loud. Then with technology, they made them quiet. Like the 10D for example. Then it is like they just completely overlooked it with the new cameras.

Except Leica M they were quite and they are still very, very quite.
