I am going to be shooting with 2 7D bodies this weekend for the first time and I will be syncing the time of each body with my desktop so I can keep the photos in order but I also want to keep my image numbers from overlapping.

I will have a 70-200 on one body and a 400 on the other, and I will be switching out the 400 with a wide angle for podium & lifestyle shots. I am not sure which body will get the most use as this is a new track and I'm not sure about the distances.

I am thinking about resetting the image numbers on one and copying an image #5000 to my CF card and forcing the camera to start at 5001. I haven't done this before but according to the manual and what I have read on here this should work.

Last time I shot with a 7D and a 1DmkIII so overlapping images where not a problem.

Any other ideas?

I often shoot with two or more cameras... but since I rename all my images later after downloading them, it really doesn't matter if my cameras happen to generate the same file number occasionally.

Whatever I use to transfer them from memory cards to computer, Lightroom and Windows will both handle a duplicate file number, simply adding a suffix to the second one uploaded in order to prevent over-writing.

Once I have all the files downloaded into a file, I sort them by date/time shot to get them in order, then rename them.

Use lightroom or aperture and set them to auto rename the files to date and time file name format. Simple and make sure that your photos are all sortable according to the time it's been taken. Important if you are using 2 bodies and want to arrange the photos in order.

So after all this I remembered to reset one camera to zero, and I copied an image #5000 to my CF card and set the other to 5001. It worked out great to avoid overlapping.

The problem, I forgot to check the time in both cameras... my camera was over an hour off from the rental camera.... sigh.
I fixed it for Sunday's races and it worked perfectly, all photos are almost in perfect order from both cameras.
