Should I sell my 85 1.8 for the Sigma 85 1.4?

Just curious cause I hate the minium focusing distance on the 85 1.8. How big is the image quality and bokeh between the 2? Thanks in advance!

The price is a tad bit of a concern it's just that i'm more concerned about the dodgy AF on the Sigma lenses. Had issues with the Sigma 50 so i'm praying that if i do get their 85, it'll be spot on out of the box. I do have a manual focusing 85 1.4 and love it but there will be times when AF is needed so that's why i want the 85. Isn't the sigma minimum focusing distance a bit shorter compared to the canon?

Great pics, impressive.

Curious what lens created the bokeh in pics #15 and #25 on this page http://downsphotography.com …ainst-breast-cancer-ball/ (external link)

I owned both in the past and you bet the Sigma is better! I find the colour/contrast a lot better SOOC, bokeh is a lot smoother too. Yes it doesn't focus as quick (but accurate!) as the 85 1.8, it's just better in every other way. In the end, it costs 2x for a reason.

Here's some examples (i am no pro...)

Here's a set I have from the last Sigma I had, just got a new one today. It's not only better than the 1.8, it rivals the 85L...L Purists will laugh at this, but, I've owned a few 85L's and I prefer the Sigma...FWIW, the AF is much better on Sigma 85 than the Sigma 50....It's worth more that the $969 it costs, especially when you consider the L costs $2100

You state that you dislike the min focus distance, have you considered the 35mm 1.4 samyang manual focus only lens, it has an 11 inch distance, and that is really significant enough! yes its manual focus, but it is sharp as my tongue on chipotle taco night, and has very high regards here, and elsewhere, like DXO.

Thanks! I used the 50 1.8 as my only lens during the ball.

Yes I had the 35 1.4, but didn't like it. I think in the future I will get a 24

I just sold my Sigma 85 1.4, not that it was a bad lens it was actually my favourite lens by far on a crop as it is basically the same focal length and depth of field wide open as a Canon 135 f/2 on a full frame. With regards to sharpness is it good wide open at f/1.4, very good by f/1.8 and insanely sharp at f/2 and above.

I have now moved to using a 5D II with a 70-200 2.8 IS II so I didn't really need the sig for what I am now shooting although it was a hard decision to part with it.

Here are some shots with shallow DoF the exif information is in tact. The 1st two shots are with a crop 40D shot at f/1.8 & f/1.4 , The second two shots are with a full frame 1Ds II shot at f/1.4 & f/1.6.
