Theres alot on 1D4 to 5D3, but little for the older model.

I just got the 5d3, but I just went through sinus surgery and can't really shoot with it. I have the 1DIII, too, and am interested in how these two compare in the AF department. I just shot Disney on ice with the 1D and I was thoroughly amazed with its ability. If the 5dIII is anywhere near that, I could probably sell the 1d because the 5d will suit the purposes I bought the 1d for.- lowlight focusing, focusing speed, focusing accuracy in lower light.

Interested, as you are, if anyone made the full switch.

Please upload as much as you like - I've curious to see how they compare, especially on low light and AF.

But at £3000 I'm not sure how much better it would have to be, even after sale I'd have to find about £2000!

:)... So far, I've shot pictures of my bedroom with the 5D3. Being laid up for surgery sucks with such a new toy sitting on the pool table. At least it will give RRS tIme to get me my L plate.

You mean low light as in high ISO? Or AF? Or both?

I used to own the 1D3, twice over as a matter of fact. I would say it would be a significant upgrade other than the build and 10fps. Everything else is just better on the 5D3. You'll gain perhaps 1 to 1.5 stops of high ISO noise, video, high resolution LCD, better AF tracking, better low light focusing, spot AF, 21MP vs. 10MP, which is a pretty big leap, etc, etc.

I think it would be a worthwhile upgrade.

Nick, that's pretty much where I'm leaning. I'll probably shoot a bit with the 5d while I send the 1d to CPS for cleaning and shutter count. May sell it if I believe the 5d will meet my requirements. To be honest, I think it will exceed my abilities by far. I just want to make sure I have better AF and ISO; which it should.

Better AF. Check.
Better ISO. Check.

The only reason to keep the 1D3 would be the build, 10fps, 1.3x crop factor, and spot metering on selected AF point.

The AF on the 5D3 has all the modern trimmings. Spot AF. Ability to start tracking a target from any point, not just the center, etc, etc. I think it's fantastic.

I agree with everything you've mentioned so far. If it wasn't for the fact that I sometimes like to get out and shoot in heavy rain/heavy snow conditions I would have no problem letting my 1D3 go since buying the 5D3. As it sits right now I will keep both since the 1D3 is still a phenomenal camera.

To the OP, without posting examples because I don't have anything that would represent controlled testing, I will say that IMO ISO 12800 on the 5D3 is about the same as 3200 on the 1D3. I shoot RAW and edit with LR 4.1 for my workflow. The 22 vs 10 MP leaves a lot of headroom for cropping (which I didn't think I would care about until I actually had it).

The files also do a number on my computer when importing, editing, exporting, and uploading because they're so much larger so make sure your machine is capable of keeping up.

If you don't care about the reasons nicksan mentioned then I don't think you can honestly go wrong by making the switch.

Oh yeah, the only thing I really miss from the 1D3 is spot metering from a selected AF point (though after reading a few other threads on here it appears that the 5D3 may give a heavy amount of bias towards the selected point when in evaluative mode. I haven't experimented with this for myself just yet).

Good luck with your decision.

Yep sorry thats what I meant - I think the MP difference more than makes up for the crop - I could easily loose the FPS as I rarely "machine gun" and as I have only one weather sealed lens thats not an issue and I could always get a grip, still I'd have to wait a fair while for a price drop then save up.
