Ah, well in that case it is fully understandable that you are impressed with the 5D3. Congratulations and enjoy. :)

But at the same time, please understand that for all the 5D2-shooters out there, the 5D3 doesn't bring much to the table. People were hoping for a significant upgrage and sensor improvement, but Canon gave them a "5D2.1" or "5D2N", and named it the 5D3.

Seems only fair...

POTN is only offering Canon Photographer 2.1

I had a quick look at your Flickr, and I find it strange that you put so much value in high FPS, when most of your photography won't benefit from it. ??? Higher DR and more detail is what you (and I) need.

..Unless you have some secret collection of sport photos hidden away somewhere?

Edit: And Increased FPS is no excuse to skip sensor improvement. I wish Canonites would just stop trying to find silly excuses all the time?

I actually do have a collection of sports photos on my facebook, which I will not divulge to individuals on this forum. I only post what I'd like Getty to look at on that flickr page. I see no use in sending my friends to flickr when facebook is good enough and easy for me to upload too since everyone wants sports photos. I also work for my schools newspaper and yearbook class, which needs many sports photos. I can post examples if you'd like.

The 5d Mark III is the reason why I will get a 70-200 2.8 IS USM II next month instead of upgrading my body! - guys just invest in lenses, Canon will come up with something worth to upgrade to eventually!

If you say so.

I say so too, and I think it is safe to say that many thousands of 5D2 owners feel the same way.

That is the main reason to why I'm staying with Canon.

I am also invested (not emotionally invested) into Canon gear, and switching brands is too much of a hassle.

I hope the D800 scared Canon into working harder and putting more R&D into sensor development.

Surprised huh?

Yes, because I can acknowledge that Canon has released an underwhelming product, while others blindly raise it to the sky, even though it is a half assed product when compared to the competition from Nikon.

Is it enough to make me switch? Almost, but not completely.

+1! This.

But such thinking is far too complicated for the brain of a fanboy. ;) They see everything in black and white.

And also compared to the community's expectations before the 5D3 was released.

There is something called the assimilation and contrast effect.
This basically means you either live with the product and its flaws (assimilation) or you turn against it (contrast). And it seems to me that most fan boys here are in favor to the assimilation ;).

jrista I am fully with you on this and I too am disappointed with Canon. I have been waiting a long time for the 5D3 and I have to say there are a lot of things I like about it, but the D800E looks closer to what I am after. I am quite heavily invested in Canon and I don't want to change to Nikon, but for the first time I am giving it some real consideration. I am just going to let the dust settle and consider all the evidence in the next few months. The very high prices of Canon in the UK also are not helping matters!

It's clear to me that the D800 offers better DR and low ISO noise. I can appeciate that if I upscale 22mp files from the 5diii to 36mp, push shadows a couple of stops and then pixel-peep at 100% on a monitor (which is what the Fred Miranda article did), then I'll see a big difference in Nikon's favour. But, if I print at reasonable sizes (say up to 16x20) then I'll probably never notice (as the FM article also noted).

If I wasn't invested in Canon gear and was looking for a landscape camera, I'd go for the D800 without doubt. But, is Canon yet so far behind to make a difference in most real-world scenarios? I'd say not yet, but Canon need seriously to look at their competitive position with Nikon/Sony.

Totally agree with this statement. What is it with UK Canon pricing? A 5diii plus 24-70ii will set you back in excess of £5k (that's about $8000 for you US guys)!! The 5dii plus 24-70 mk I can be had for a shade over £2k. That's just a crazy difference.

Higher DR and more detail is what you (and I) need.

I don't really understand why people like you stick around here. You have a couple lenses and a single body that you could easily get rid of and move over to Nikon. It's like you're happier to hang out here and moan about Canon and everyone who is happy with their cameras.

Personally I have no problem saying that Nikon is building a better sensor these days... it's been this way since the D3/D700 came out. This was obvious when the first reviews were coming out about the 5D3 + D800. The question I (and probably others) need to ask themselves is whether the improvements they're making are actually useful for me.

For me, it's not. I got a nice bump in IQ at high ISO (important to me), a HUGE upgrade in AF (very important to me), sensible pixel count and I can adjust the size of the RAW files (important to me), increase in FPS (important to me) and other features I wasn't expecting like silent shutter mode. An increase in DR would be nice, but for 99% of what I shoot it's really not necessary.

So I made a rational decision about my purchase. I guess this probably makes me a fanboy apologist like you call everyone else? Oh but hey, I'm going to go make a few thousand bucks with my crappy noise machines pretty soon.
